I know that my local Apple store also carries both matte and glossy in the store (Chrisitiana Mall, Newark, DE).

True, you were misled.

Stores get a mainstream selection of configurations, but not all combinations and permutations. For example, the San Francisco Stonestown store has glossy, but not the high-resolution. Also not the highest-sized hard drives.

Since I want 4 GB, 300 GB HD, high-resolution glossy widescreen display, it seems that a BTO will be the way to go. (Yes, I know I could save a few pence getting RAM myself, but then I'm stuck with RAM lying around the house, but that doesn't change the HD bump (cheaper than the usual Apple Store mark-up) or the screen.)

I think I'm going to wait a few weeks, see what the unboxers post, and then order. I have to live out of my next laptop for another three years, after all, ...
