So, at work, I have to use IE (6.0 SP2) to browse MacNN.
I always have a window with MacNN open in the background and refresh it now and then.

I noticed lately that MacNN tends to freeze up the browser on a regular basis, takes about 10-15 seconds to become responsive again.
About once a day, my MacNN window just crashes, even when it's in the background, not active.

I think the culprits are farkin &*$^@*# ads that get loaded and refreshed.

So anyways, since I can't use a different browser, I'm stuck.

You could use the flash-drive based version of FireFox. It takes no admin or super-user rights to do that. If you can insert a flash drive, you can run it.

Tried it, doesn't work. They block it with some evil registry entries.

USB drive doesn't work, or portable Firefox doesn't work?
Sell or send me your vintage Mac things if you don't want them.

It always does

Your restrictions won't block calc, winword, iexplore, explorer etc, so renaming anything to something that is allowed will work all the time.

As for the USB drive issue, I remember you mentioning issues with it in a thread about Windows in the Lounge I think. Are they disabled or does yours just not work? You can try assigning a new drive letter in computer management, although I doubt you can get to that.

Actually, I had major issues with SanDisk USB sticks on a Mac. Very fickle, only works if plugged directly into a USB 2.0 port on the computer.
Blows when plugged into a powered or unpowered hub.

Ok, so I have been using a renamed Firefox ("IExplore.exe") for the last couple of days.

And it crashes MORE often than M$ IE. WTF ?
At least twice a day, Firefox quites w/o any further notice.

Maybe it's bad karma to rename FF

Does anything else crash on that box? Since it affects more than one application, there is some common issue at work.

• Hardware glitch.
• Driver problem, maybe for the ethernet port. Or something else common to browsers.
• Trojan / virus / keylogger compatibility issue. It tries to keep IE covered, and had trouble. It retries regularly, and your new "IE" presents more compatibility problems. Upgrade to the latest version of the malware to see if the issue is fixed.

Well, I can exclude malware, as it's a work computer that is being patched on a regular basis and uses a virus scanner with the latest virus sigs.

Oddly enough, I don't know of ANY other websites that crashes so predictably as MacNN. Yes, IE crashes everu now and then, but not on a daily basis. Only at 'NN.

Hardware glitch - maybe. But how would I know ?
I don't have a lot of issues with other applications, like M$ Office.

Sorry turtle, but it would suggest a problem with your PC.
I have the forums open constantly in Firefox and it never crashes.
Are you sure nothing else crashes randomly? Could it be a bad flash install perhaps and some bad flash ads?

You don't have to be sorry, it's just my work PC

I think it is something ad / flash related.
They oatched the PC to make it more secure, and disabled some ActiveX stuff. Maybe that cuases problems for scripts that are supposed to run, but really can't.

At any rate, it's gotta be something related to how MacNN does ads. I don't have the problems with any other website.
