Many websites, particularly international ones, still have splash screens before you can enter the main site. This is very annoying, but also because many of them rely on Flash. You cannot access the main site unless you click "OK" which isn't visible if you don't have Flash. All websites with splash screen need to die.

In fact, all splash screens need to die period. I play Age of Empires 2 on a regular basis, and I'm sick of clicking through the splash screens and introduction video each and every time. There is no need for me to see it every time!

Even though you can dismiss it easily, and doesn’t need Flash, the one on mobile web Twitter which comes out of nowhere if you’re not logged in drives me up the ****ing wall.

Flash needs to die, too, obviously.

Some of those splash screens are probably due to EU GDPR regulations. Guessing bigger sites don't show them to visitors from non-EU countries but the smaller ones might well do.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

I haven't had Flash installed for years now, but the splash screens that show up on every site the first time you used it since early 2018 appear here, as well.

That has to do with new privacy regulations in Europe mandating cookie handling options/information, as those contain personal identifiers.

It was a glorious day when I finally found a native MacOS Pandora client, and could ditch it once and for all.

We are now having to add annoying "This site uses cookies. Please click to agree blah blah blah" to all our sites. Darned EU.

The thing is that you can't just have the information banner, all tracking has to be off until the user clicks to accept. I have started to skip sites that make it too hard to opt out of tracking, or just visit them in an incognito window.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

Is there something under there that specifically needs shielding from the pee?

Just the corner.

I think the idea is to spread things out. Those corners get melted away.

Full disclosure: I have peed on a train platform before, but doing it in a corner is for amateurs.

It’s compounded by our shitty weather. The train is a really attractive option for homeless people trying to get out of the cold.

Was on the phone with Capital One customer service asking about a theoretical question. The guy said something about 10% more, so I said something about using $10,000 as an example, and the guy on the phone was reaching for a calculator (as he told me) in order to add 10% to 10,000. Quite sad.

Best guess right now is that’s an armored car with bags-o-rubles.

I thought it odd the windshield didn’t shatter.

Most likely the shielding metal is stainless, while the other metal is just painted. When the paint flakes, the pee will make it rust.

In Berlin they have apparently solved it by painting things with hydrophobe paint. Any water that falls on that surface will bounce back, which includes pee. Presumably this makes people pee somewhere else next time.

I feel this would only deter people who can’t piss at an angle.

For some added context to the original photo, I think that’s at either the Addison stop, or the 35th Street stop, which are the Cubs and the Sox respectively.

Hamburg.

We have a real problem with hordes of drunk people pissing at buildings and front doors in St. Pauli (one of the reasons I moved away after fifteen years there).

This paint works well.

I used to live in a basement apartment down the street from a bar.

Because the entrance was somewhat secluded, it was a prime spot for drunks to pee.

Nothing more satisfying than hearing that, and then banging on the door as loud as humanly possible, mid-piss.

Was going to google where it was, and all the googlings came up with news for San Francisco doing this. Clearly this idea is spreading, but maybe Hamburg was first.

St. Pauli Peeback startet in March of 2015.

It was hailed as the newest thing and garnered some international attention over the next year or so.

Holy cow...

Cops were called to the scene where they placed the student in the back of a police cruiser. He reportedly started licking the car’s windows before trying to kick his way out of the vehicle. Asked if he was under the influence of drugs, the boy reportedly told cops “LSD, man!”

After being taken to a Youngstown, Ohio, hospital for examination, the boy attempted to strangle an attending nurse with her own stethoscope while proclaiming “I’m an Avenger!” That was where the high schooler claimed his dog had provided him with the hallucinogen fueling his outburst.

I dunno...In my experience, trying to kick out the window of a car is pretty much not on the agenda of anyone using LSD. Ditto the act with the nurse and stethoscope. I'm not questioning whether his dog told him it was LSD or not, I'm just saying the effin' dog lied to him. Unless the stuff was heavily mixed with amphetamine or somesuch.

Quite a trip for his money. Good value. Especially if his dog didn't charge for the drugs.

Original The Smoking Gun story. Police report page 1 (3 pages, use page selector - top of right sidebar)

Once at St. Elizabeth's ER area, [redacted] began yelling "I'm an Avenger" and asking medical personnel "Am I black?".
[redacted] was placed in exam room #20 as medical personnel begin trying to examine him and gather information from him.
When asked his name he replied "I'm Cameron Bednar" and then asked a male nurse and Ptl. DeAngelo "will you guys jack me off?".
