Google is looking towards renting space in all Best Buy stores in the United States in 2014, according to a new rumor. The floorspace rental within the big box retailer would in theory be used to sell
Google Glass to customers, and would follow in the footsteps of
Microsoft and
Samsung in launching a store-within-a-store for their own products.
The rumor
from Robert Scoble suggests that the space rental would be for customers to try on Glass in-store before buying, and then going through the usual Glass fitting and tutorial procedures that current Glass owners have had to go through. An
earlier rumor claimed that Google would open up its own chain of Glass stores, but the store-within-a-store concept would allow for the same thing but at a considerably cheaper cost to Google.
While the rumor seems plausible, Scoble stresses that it is unverified. His source also claims that the amount of space rented stretches to 6,000 square feet, but not if that figure is for all stores collectively or for each individual store, something which makes the supposed rental space implausible in either extreme.
