I was thinking of building a Freenas for my home network and do not know if the following configuration is possible. I would like to back up my iTunes library to it and use it server as a Plex server for my library as well but still use my external drive as my main library that my iMac connects to. I would use the Freenas to serve my wife's MacBook Pro, our iPhones, iPads etc. Is this possible?

As for iTunes, yes it's possible. One thing I found as an issue with iTunes libraries on an external device of any kind was that it took a lot longer for iTunes to find the next song...every time. This was a while ago, but it was on a 100Mbp wired network, so it wasn't the network media giving me problems. Maybe Freenas is faster today than the software I used then, but there's still going to be a different - and longer - delay.

I have no experience with Plex servers, but as long as your NAS storage is big enough, you should be able to make it work as long as Freenas supports Plex.

The last I looked into it, and this was awhile ago, Plex was a bit of a pain to get working side-by-side with FreeNAS. But things may have changed.

Just minor point, it's now "NAS4Free" (the ongoing development of what WAS FreeNAS). Found here:
