[FONT=Verdana]Hi everyone. It's been a while since I last posted here. How's everybody doing? In any case, I needed some advice. A girl from Israel came to visit Chicago for a few months on this program. She and I became friends and I showed her some sights of the city (the Art Institute, Millennium Park, Second City, and the Botanic Gardens). Anyway, as a thank you on her last day she made me a necklace with a small seashell from Haifa. Since she didn't have a lot of time, she put the sea shell on this plastic string thing which does not keep tied very well, nor does it look that great. Does anyone have any suggestions of places in Chicago's North Shore or online where I can buy an appropriate string to hold this seashell around my neck? Please let me know.

Thanks.

if you don't want to pay $$ for a silver/gold chain, go to your local bead store and get a string of leather. They will likely be able to show you how to tie it in a dual slidy knot thing (that adjusts to go over your head), or maybe they will try to sell you some other kind of closure. Slidy knot's the simplest though. I've got a bunch of necklaces like that.

Necklaces are a symbol of femininity. In particular, a seashell necklace says, "You're a girly man. I hope this necklace is some consolation for your impending lifelong virginity. Good luck."

To address your question, I totally have no clue about Chicago. My expertise is quite limited to jewelry etiquette, granola, and environmentally conscious livin'. Andi sounds pretty knowledgeable, though.

Granola makes most people fart like a steam engine. How does that reconcile with environmentally conscious livin'?

Notice the fart is GREEN? Green is natural. It's a symbol of all that is beautiful in the world. Is there anything more natural than letting one? Of course not. Feel good knowing you are nurturing Mother Earth with your warm, loving emanations.

I rest my case.

You should offer up a nice pearl necklace if she ever returns.

You have some choices, depending on the size of the plastic string she used originally. If it's small, use something called "tiger tail" which is available in hobby and craft stores (and in a variety of colors). If it's pretty thick, then leather lacing is more appropriate.

Oh, and giving you a necklace means she's fond of you, not that she thinks you're girly. As for IceEnclosure's suggestion, you could take it literally and find a nice cultured pearl necklace to give her in return and that would be a very nice gesture.
