Well you can't have it support just anything. It has to be programmed in. I bet Apple will allow for that, though. Perhaps in plugin form?

My vote is for Internet Scrapbook (and the ability to read existing scrapbook files from IE).

Being able to quickly save and a snapshot of any webpage really comes in handy.

...and tabs would be welcome, too. javascript:smilie('')

Bookmark + history filtering in the same way as iCal.

Oh and either make it handle ftp itself or fix Mac OS X to handle it properly.
Nothing to see, move along.

A little halo around clicked links that open new windows, so when you close the window you don't have to remember where you were on the page. OW, Chimera, and IE all do that, and I've come to somewhat depend on it.

- better cookies management:
I want to be able to accept cookies on a on by one basis and to accept cookies only until i quit safari. iCab has a very good cookies management.

- more contextual menu options

- more columns in bookmarks view

Certificate managment, and the ability to view sites with dodgy certificates (if you want) would be nice.

My University webmail certificate has never worked properly with any browser on the mac for some reason, and will not even open in Safari.

Works fine on IE on the PC, but not on the mac... very strange.

Well, tabs should be included (as an option that isn't on by default)

And I like brushed metal... I didn't when they started making apps with it, but now I do... It's not like iMovie 2 and all it's wasted space. Safari is VERY clean looking.

Me too.
I'd like AutoComplete/AutoFill/whatever.
A loading widget would be nice, too.

There's other threads for the discussion of tabs so here's the other features I want.

I want the tab key to cycle between links in the page. I surf from the keyboard!

Toolbar customization: I think we can assume that this is comming. We'll get multiple button sizes and optional text labels... like the other customizable toolbars. The beta's implementation seems like a place holder.

ROFL! You know, people always need something to whine about.

"No tabs? Nah, I'm not going to use it!"

When they added tabs support...

"Cool, new tabs! Nice but I don't really need it... What a waste of development time"

It already has this (at least on my install) - though it is subtle. It renders as a dashed line around the link, rather than the form-esqe halo. Subtle, but I'm starting to prefer it.

My short list:

1. EyeTV support (I know, that's not Apple's deal)

2. Tabbing to links and buttons along with text boxes

3. Integration with Sherlock, e.g., using the Google box for a simple search, and clicking a Sherlock button for advanced search within the same window. I envision this working just like the bookmarks overlays the current window now.

What he said.

I would, however, like to be able to edit file helpers. Safari can't view inline psd files and I wish I could add that. So I guess more configurations and modifications.

I REALLY for some reason need a loading widget, ya know the two arrows going around in a circle to tell you the page is loading. I know, I have the status bar down at the bottom, but it is not the same thing, all the status bar tells you is if it waiting for documents to load, but no actual info is displyed telling you it is still trying to load.

I really don't like brushed metal, but metallifizer took care of that for me.

Some really cool custom icons, along with a customizable tool bar would be nice. Safari Mask icons are better, but really not that nice.

Somebody mentioned integration with Sherlock, that sounds like it could be interesting.

oh ya - scrapbook would definitely be very nice, and how about some consistent spell checking...

1- Username/password via the KeyChain
2- Tabbed browsing as an option

The biggest pain of using Safari is having to remember all the usernames/passwords to access various sites. I'm not talking about banking sites; just sites that require a username/password for access and do not store it in cookies. And managing multiple open/minimized windows is getting very tedious.

GZIP ability on webpages like Mozilla (shrinks a MacNN forum page from 100KB to 10KB and therefore increased d/l speed a LOT)

Keychain access

Tabs of some sort

A feature/bugfix I'd love to see is window placement memory. safari doesn't seem to like when people have their dock on the left side of the screen. The starting position of Safari always causes my dock to overlap the window a little so when my cursor is moving around it the Dock magnification kicks in. Thus I have to move the window manually whenever I open one. The ability to set an opening window position would be useful.

I'd also really like links to be tab stopped because I too browse from the keyboard. I also miss Chimera's password manager and cookie handling. I find these two features pretty important for modern dayweb browsing. I don't like having to rely on cookies to store user information, having a keychain protected user/pass repository would be cool. Cookie management is similar, Safari's options are limited which is understandable considering its age but fine grained cookie management is important. I may want to block all cookies from ads.doubleclick.net but keep everything from amazon.com.

OS X.1 compatablity!

uhh yeah I havn't tried sarafi yet since I'm in X.1... but uhh I'd say things it needs, good tab system better than what's out there now... some user coustomizable features... auto fill can be REALLY useful sometimes... what else... OH and good keyboard shortcuts make a lot of them for things like up and down like I use page up and page down now a lot because of Mozilla but I used to use Alt Up and Alt Down and stuff... make it VERY keyboard friendly... like any good apple app.

I know! And they keep saying to use Chimera and Omniweb if we want tabs. We don't use Safari for our health. We use it for the speed! Can we help it if we want both speed AND tabs?! Sheesh! If you don't use Tabs, DON'T USE THEM! Just shut up! There are MANY people who DO want tabs and DO use them.

Window size and placement memory or save feature (like OW) would be great. Then tabs

I don't think it would be a good idea if Apple would ruin Safari's easy and elegant user interface by implementing something as cumbersome as tabs.

They should leave that to the geek(o) browsers.

Seeing as how they have never used tabs on anything...

You also forgot Project Builder, which handles tabs nicely (although it's not for "most users...").

I don't know why this is, (and I can't find much help in Apple/support) but I can't view Flash files in Safari - I get the plug-in, install - nothing. It doesn't seem like many people are having this problem, so does anyone know waht is up?
Other than that wish, I would definitely like to see tabs.

Will people stop saying that? Tabs do not intrude in any way into the user interface if you don't use them! My parents both use different browsers, Mozilla and Chimera; neither of them cares about or uses tabs so they don't ever use them and they use the browser the exact same way as if it didn't have the option to use tabs. I don't mind not having tabs. But I do mind idiotic anti-tab arguments like that. If the option to have tabs was added and you chose not to use it, Safari's 'easy and elegant user interface' would remain entirely unchanged.

What I want to see by version 1.0
- TABBED windows!
- Tab to buttons and drop downs (what a pain to grab your mouse for it!)
- No brushed metal UI. Looks awful
- Better looking icons on the toolbar
- Context menu for item properties
- View source in a program of your choice
- GZIP support for faster downloads
- Customizeable default search site
- Support for document.all
- a page loading cursor so you know that the link you clicked on is loading (arrow and small spinning beach ball?)
- AppleScript do Script method as in IE. I don't think Safari has it.
- Auto Complete. What a great time saver!
- better cookie management

What I want to see in the next major update:
- Splitter windows
- Scrapbook, this is a GREAT feature only availble on the mac version of IE
- A cache window showing each file downloaded (like Windows IE's temporary Internet files folder)
- Support for attached behaviors
- Support for the same CSS filters support as in Windows IE 6.0
PowerBook G4 800, 512MB RAM, 60GB HD
OS 10.3/9.2.2

My list is similar to most of the others. In order:

1. Tabs, and the ability to bookmark tab groups;
2. Some short of shortcut feature for the address bar (like in OmniWeb);
3. Broader username/password keychain support; and
4. Better https support.

Oh, yeah: we really need the ability to *permanently* turn on the "check spelling as you type" feature!!

Purhaps this is more of an iSync wish but I would like to be able to sync my Safari bookmarks between 2 macs through .mac using iSync like address book does. And purhaps even be able to view them through the .mac web account.

Most wanted feature: stfu about tabs. Safari doesn't have them, Chimera does. We KNOW you all want tabs so leave it alone.

And for you, sir, what did you use before Safari? You don't have to go getting angry with Apple, just revert back to Chimera or Mozilla, or Phoenix, or Internet Explorer, or stop whining.

Sheesh.

And this is exactly why Apple shouldn't bother implementing them. Most users just don't care. The interface shouldn't be made more complicated for the majority of people, just because a small minority (yet a very vocal one) wants a dubious feature.

From what I've heard, I think most users DO care about Tabs. And I feel confident they WILL show up. One way or another. If not from Apple, then from someone else like Unsanity or something. I can't live Tabless much longer and I CAN'T go back to any other browser.

And you can't stop whining either, eh?

I'm sure you must be frustrated with those of us telling the pro-tab people to shoosh, but can you understand our point? It's been a week... and STILL there are new threads being made about Safari and tabs of some sort, whether it be a request, a poll, a question whether Hyatt said tabs or not, etc.

Sheesh.

The only reason why it *looks* like most users want tabbed-browsing was well explained by Developer. This minority is so vocal that they make it seem like the whole world wants tabs.

While others who don't give a crap don't bother posting their point of view on the matter...don't even know how to work a web forum...

Or they'll be like me, opposing vocally in hopes that developers don't misinterpret little vocal minorities on geeky web forums as the majority of the normal computer-user population.

You CAN do this, try typing this into the google search field on Safari:

site:www.macnn.com +Powerbook

Then try:

site:www.macupdate.com printer

It should only return pages from each site. Enjoy! Look into the advanced seach options from google, they can really help limit your search results!
