just got my ap card, went to a "hotspot" in NYC (84th & 3rd ave: New world coffee via nycwireless).
AP shows great signal strength but I can't connect to the internet either via Safari of IE.
I tried restarting, re-conecting to the AP network, but noting gives...what went wrong?
Don't have a base station, will try Apple Store in SoHo.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

I'm having the same problem. Last week the hotspot worked fine and then I had to format and reinstall everything on my HD -- now when I go to the hotspot, I can see the network... I can connect to it with great reception but no program can find the internet (safari, IE, Safari, etc). What gives? I went to network settings and it says, "Configure Using DHCP" so the advice of the first respondent didn't work.
I'll try again in a few days if nobody has any advice, but it's disconcerting as I'm wondering if I haven't set something up correctly after the reinstall of everything.

Maybe the hotspot isn't set up to allow joe user on the street access. Are you sure that it is a public hotspot?

I haven't connected at a Starbucks, but I have read their brochure. Don't they have a very specific process to sign up for their initial (free) service? It was my impression that that was how you signed up for longer term service.

T-Mobile is definitely NOT a free public service.
But you should know right away if your connection is working...
Any browser will take you straight to their log-in page, no exceptions.
Of course, if they've added some free service since I used their trial month, then I'm talking out my ass.
