Can someone give me a summary of what the differences are between these two?

Why is Airport Extreme cheaper, and does it still work with your net connection?

I basically want something that I can plug into my cable modem and broadcast my net connection via wifi... Does Extreme do this?

Thanks.

Yes, Express will quite capably share your net connection, and also provide you with AirTunes (to play music to your stereo wirelessly) and USB printer sharing wirelessly.

Airport Extreme seems to be being phased out and/or more targeted towards schools/offices. IIRC it can have a 56kb modem in it, and an extra ethernet port.

Go the express.

either will let you do that.

express will also allow you to stream music from iTunes to home stereo speakers.

extreme allows more simultaneous connections and includes a modem and a LAN ethernet port that you can connect to a desktop mac or PC or to a hub.
