Hi all,

I'm new to OSX - Can anyone tell me how to line up the folders in my documents directory, and also, how to rename files?

Thanks.

Is there seriously no option to line up icons within a folder, or rename files in OSX?

Because if not, that's pretty weird.

Hi, Sudogenic.

There are a variety of ways to arrange icons in folders. There are specific Views (Icon, List, or Column) and options within a given view.

Open a folder and, in the Menu Bar, select a choice under View to display the files within the folder in either Icon, List, or Column View. To alter what is displayed in a given View, select View > View Options (or press Command-J) and make choices accordingly. The "Command' key is the one bearing the Apple logo.

To rename a file, click it once to select it, then do one of the following:

- click it's name again; or
- press Return

and the name becomes a field in which you can type, filled with the current name. You can alter the existing name or type a new name.

Since you are new to Mac OS X, you may also benefit from some of the educational resources I recommend in my Learning About Mac OS X FAQ.
Good Luck!
