I've only ever seen HP iPods at two stores, one of which is RadioShack. Now, RadioShack is going to be selling Apple iPods, and that would have probably eaten into HP's iPod sales significantly.

I've seen HP iPods in WalMart, Best Buy, Target... The thing isn't iPods, it's HP-they're "having some difficulty." They blamed it on Carly Fiorina, but it's mostly about buying Compaq and then emulating them . Bad products that are synonymous with a company (desktop and laptop computers) don't make a lot of money for that company, so they're probably looking at reducing their exposure in some areas.

Need bugmenot.

Anyway, I think the iPod is so closely identified with Apple that it didn't make sense for HP to sell them. Maybe when there were Mac iPods and PC iPods, but not today.

These big players jump on everything that seems to make money. Glad to see that they even cannot sell a superior product under their boring business brand.

HP only made up 5% of iPod sales. Turns out Apple didn't need HP after all!

This was still a batter "marketshare" for HP than for some other mp3 player companies with their own crappy products...

The box for one and the logos on the back. Never seen a store that had an HP iPod for sale.

i have one, because 8 months ago i was using a pc, but then i realized 1 of 2 things:
1. it worked with the apples at school (and later the powerbook i got after i fell in love with apple)
2. now that i have an hp ipod and its stopped working, i cant take it to the apple store and have them replace it (i tried)

so it looks like ill be dishing out another 350$ for an ipod.

oh well, the color screens are awesome.

When the deal was announced back then, I thought it was pretty pointless. *shrug*

I have heard that HP's customer service is pretty accommodating - did you contact the company?

Another possibility:
Since Costco is selling them, and they are pretty accommodating, bring it back to them and ask if they would exchange it for you?

Costco guy: HP iPod. Take it back to them and demand you get another one or a complete refund. A product 8 months old should not break, and if the MFR stops making them that soon, then you should get a store credit to say the least. Do not accept no for an answer. Go up the food chain if you must. Be nice, but firm. Speak to the store general manager if you have to. Say, "I want to be happy shopping here in the future, but I cannot in good conscience if this is not resolved and quickly." <smile>.
