I have had trouble getting the sound to work in some old classic games:

-Shanghai 2 (unknown age)
-Tetris (mid 80s)
-Wizardry 1: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord (1985-94)

I am running the games in OS X via classic (9.2.2) on a PowerMac G4. In the first 2 games the sound is not a big deal but it is needed in some parts of Wizardry. I am guessing that some aspect of how the sound is programmed in those games just does not work with OS 9. In the case of Wizardry I know that there are not any missing sound files. I copyed a working version from a Macintosh Portable (system 6) onto the G4 and the sound still does not work.

Is there any known fix? About the only thing I can think of trying is vMac, but unless they have started updating it again it is a pain to use.

I've run into this as well with few REALLY old games. One is a simple face matching game that was on my SE. For some reason, maybe their 68k nature, they just don't cut it in classic. They work fine in OS 9.2.2., though, if you can boot directly in.

Humm... For me the sound does not work if I boot OS9 or run it under classic.

Back in the day, games relied on a set of Extensions, called "Sprockets", for things like sound. If I recall, there was a specific "SoundSprocketLib" I see in my Classic install, it is located in the "Extensions (disabled)" folder, along with SoundManager and a whole bunch of OpenGL and QuickDraw Extensions.

Try enabling some of these using the Extensions Manager and see if things start working.
