Any OS that runs iTunes 7.2 I'd think.

Oh, I see - you mean for syncing it? I'm sure 10.3.9 will be fine.

I just bought two iPhones, one for me and another for my wife.
My out of box experience was pretty good. I use a Dell pc. I did have to go and download the latest version of iTunes. Plugged in my iPhone and was activated in a few minutes. Off and running.
My wife has a PowerBook G4. The OS 10.3 needed to be upgraded to 10.4. So she couldn't even use her phone since you have to activate through iTunes. Yes, we downloaded the latest iTunes version, but still no luck. We went to the Apple store and bought 10.4. About $129 and two hours of install later I plug in the iPhone... Again, no luck.
I didn't realize the PowerBook G4 used the USB and NOT the USB 2.0. So iTunes still doesn't detect the iPhone. I can see it on iPhoto though...joy.
I'm hoping I'm just not doing something right, but it really looks like I won't be able to sync her iPhone to her iTunes on her Mac. She has an old iPod. I can't see buying a new laptop just for this, but I can probably get a cheap pc or something.
It seems like some of these questions could have been asked before I bought the phones. The fact that it is SO dependent upon all these variables for it to work surprised me. Again, my own PC experience was pretty good.
This is the strangest experience I've had with technology adoption. The core platform Mac doesn't seem to want to work very well with my other Mac hardware, but it works just fine with my PC hardware. (I guess my PC is newer than my Mac by a few months.)
Annoyed...and hoping for some insightful solution.

Jeez...I smacked my forehead when I read this. One of those D'uh! moments.
Thanks. I'll buy one tomorrow. I must just be used to having things just plug-n-play on my macs.

That's not going to work if it's a 12" PowerBook...there's no PCMCIA slot.
But it's yet another reason why it's too bad that Apple dropped FireWire support after trying to hard to make it a standard.

Sell or send me your vintage Mac things if you don't want them.

So on the iphone spec page, I know it says you need a USB 2 mac. I swear my dad sync'ed his somehow with his old USB 1 mac... I don't know how he did it. I'll give him a call and find out the details.
