I think it's in retaliation to the religious zealots that tend to come out on the internet.

You wouldn't be one of them would you?

Then I'm afraid, Makki, that you will probably have to leave, but I don't recommend it. You won't find respite from Christian-bashing anywhere nowadays; it's become the fashion on the Net and in real life.

I, too, am a "Christian believer", as you put it. I am not a fan of the incessant Christian-bashing that goes on in modern society -including these forums- any more than you are. At the same time, this was not unforetold. Look at 2 Timothy 3:11-13 for a moment:
11 Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.
12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
I'm not a fan of the KJV, but it provides for a decent enough common point of reference. Anyway, the point is that we need to learn to take this stuff in stride as long as it doesn't get physically violent, because no force on Earth is ever going to stop it. I'm not actually a moderator in the Lounge (I moderate the Developer and Web Developer forums, though they seldom need any actual moderating), but even if I was, I could ban anybody I wanted and it wouldn't fix the problem. Indeed, it would only make the problem worse. Going to other forums will not help; sooner or later, it will spread there too.

I would like to say again that a lot of this is backlash against the way that some Christians tend to continually harass others with their attempts at proselytization (in general - I am not accusing you of doing this, Millennium). For many of us, including myself, it comes from family members and thus there is no respite from it. My personal disenfranchisement with religion basically started after I decided to "come out of the closet" on the issue of evolution, which seemed necessary since at the time I was considering majoring in science. I tried to argue that science and religion didn't have to conflict with each other, but that broke down when certain relatives went berserk, and I got accused of having been entered by demons from those evil science professors. Oh, I have to make a choice, do I? Well, so be it.

Another thing is the hateful things you often hear certain people of the religious persuasion saying. I have heard actual Christians say nasty things against certain groups of people, particularly Muslims. Comments like, "You know all those times that God ordered the Jews to wipe out entire tribes in the Old Testament, and then sometimes they let some of them live and made God angry? Well, I'll bet that the Palestinians that are giving them so much trouble today are descended from those people that they should have killed." Yes, someone actually once said that to me. Hey, I know a few people from Islamic countries, and none of them have blown up any buildings or tried to poison me with anthrax, okay?

Of course, it's not all Christians who do and say these things - it's only certain people, and they're mostly from the fundamentalist camp. The problem is, those certain people are very vocal, and they give all of Christianity a bad name. Also, the constant preaching to people is actively endorsed by a lot of fundamentalist churches, so that people who do it believe they're doing God's will. Comments like the one above, as well, seem to be a logical outcome of a rigid belief that a book is 100% true, relevant, and divinely inspired with no errors or myths in it, when that book contains numerous brutal depictions of genocide. You have to rationalize it somehow.

Note that this goes the other way too - I've heard some people, when criticizing the Old Testament, say "You reap what you sow," referring to the Holocaust. No, you don't reap what your distant ancestors sowed, dammit. The Jews in the 20th century were not in the least responsible for what those ancient people did thousands of years ago.

Then, there's the contradictions in logic that the proselytizers make when they're trying to convert you. Back to the example from my family, this is a conversation we've had many a time:

"You have to accept God, or you'll go to Hell!"

"But why would a merciful and loving God send people to Hell?"

"God doesn't send you there! You send yourself there, because you inherited sin from Adam, through his blood! God has no choice! He's trying to save you, but he can't if you don't accept him!"

"But what about babies that die early on, and people that lived in Africa before any missionaries arrived? Those people never would have the opportunity to know about or accept Jesus."

"Well, since God is completely fair and just, he would be able to make an exception for those people. And for babies, there's an age of accountability."

"I thought God had no choice?! If he can make an exception for them, why not for everyone if he's a merciful and loving God?"

"You have to accept God, or you'll go to Hell!"

etc. etc. etc. Repeat ad nauseam. This is why many people feel bitter towards Christianity. If more Christians would live and let live, and would respect people's decisions who choose not to believe, I guarantee there wouldn't be as much backlash against Christianity.

Again, none of this is directed at any particular member here. I know that no one here would say some of the things I've mentioned in this post, especially you, Millennium. This is more a "state of the world" type of thing.

But enough of this, back to the funny graphics. I really hope I don't inadvertently start yet another religious flame war in this thread with this post. If that happened, it would be very unfortunate.

Although this story is almost surely apocryphal, it is true that bigot was used by the French as a term of abuse for the Normans, but not in a religious sense. Later, however, the word, or very possibly a homonym, was used abusively in French for the Beguines, members of a Roman Catholic lay sisterhood. From the 15th century on Old French bigot meant an excessively devoted or hypocritical person. Bigot is first recorded in English in 1598 with the sense a superstitious hypocrite.
