This firmware update just downloaded from apple for my macbook pro, and puts it in applications > utilities. I'm already running the latest firmware with (bootcamp) Anyone else see this firmware update?

I have this problem where i leave my macbook alone, and come back to find it restarted on me. Hopefully this update will fix it.

No, the page is fine, the URL to it is simply broken. If you fix the URL, you go to: About the SMC Firmware Update 1.0.

It still doesn't TELL YOU what the hell it does.. but i can tell you this. the whine NOISE is MUCH MUCH better. although if you put your ear to the computer you can still hear it..

The scary part is the firmware updates without you ever having to hold down the powerbutton till the sleep light flashes... This means i could bust out an application that updates your firmware, aka bricks your computer... Pretend to write a cool app, ask for password require restart. Install stuff into EFI...

sounds bad to me..

I'm talking about this page:

For detailed information on this Update, please visit this website: http: http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n303725

The page you point me to tells me nothing about what it does. Probably because Apple doesn't want to say "Fixes the Whine issue for good"

I downloaded this firmware for my new MBP 17. Upon running the program, it informed me that my computer didn't need this update.

Now, get this: The MBP 17 has the whine, but you have to put your ear to the keyboard to hear it.

Sounds like this update fixes more than just "boot issues."

System Management Controller
The 15-inch MacBook Pro uses an advanced system management controller (SMC) to manage thermal and power conditions, while keeping the acoustic noise to a minimum. The SMC is fully independent of the operating system.

Okay, then! That answers that. :-)

Note, however, that you'll still be able to hear this whine in a perfectly quiet room. Maybe it's a plot by Apple to spur use of iTunes to cover up the sound. ;-)

The best part is, even though i've always had require password for wake or screensaver checked, now it doesn't ASK FOR THE FREAKING password when you move the mouse and the screensaver is on...

Nice, wonderful,... great security..... wtf.....

I don't get this version numbering either. I thought the ROM update for bootcamp was 1.1 now this is 1.0?

I installed it and yes it didn't make me hold down the power button which is strange, it also still works with Bootcamp.

Is this SMC firmware different than the other firmware updates?

SMC firmware seems to be another thing than the main board firmware. Under System Profiler I can read:

Versión de la ROM de arranque: MBP11.0055.B02
Versión SMC: 1.2f10

Note: "ROM de arranque" is the boot firmware (EFI).

My MBP 1.83 seems to be running slightly cooler after this update and the whine seems somewhat "fainter".

MBP is cooler and whine is gone. Battery time seems shorter. Oh well.
