Whenever I turn on my MacBook or wake it up from Sleep, it makes a noise like it is loading a CD, which is kind of loud. I don't have a CD in the MacBook, either. Is this normal?

That's interesting. Does the computer also make an "aaaaah" noise when it starts up?
This could be a sign of a serious problem.

It's just the cd rom drive. Nothing to worry about.

In all seriousness, why do all slot loading Apple models make that noise? Is there any real point to it?

It would probably make the same noise if you put it in a pc, it's just checking to see if there's a disc in there and if there is it will spin it up.

My best guess is that the computer is attempting to see if anything new's happened with the optical drive while it was sleeping.
But, you're right...with a slot-loading drive, that's just unnecessary.
Who knows. Better question, even: who cares?

All Apple laptops with slot loading drive are doing this... Nothing to worry about.
