I used to love Adium back in its 1.x days, but now I use iChat. Proteus is something I'd like to use full time but it's lagging behind the others.

Adium for MSN and Yahoo. Yahoo just for cross-platform video chat.
I'd like to use iChat...

Adium, except for when I need to do video chat. Then I use iChat with my iSight.

I use Adium most of the time, Sometimes it poops all over my file transfers and once in awhile I get crazy and use AIM webchat when I'm looking to pick up some virtual hookers. Overall Adium is so much nicer looking and more featureful than anything else I've tried though.

Adium most of the time, though it really hates doing any kind of file transfers with my Windows buddies. For those times when I need it, iChat.

Actually, I lied. I use Adium all the time except for video chat and file transfers.

File transfers in 0.8.x are better than before, but they still fail to go correctly pretty often for me. It's not a firewall issue because in these cases iChat works just fine.

I used Adium while I was on Panther, but Tiger added the features I really wanted: real groups. profile support, and I am really getting into doing audio chats with my friends around the country instead of using a cell phone.

I really think the Mac Business Unit is about three people who spend most of their day playing ping-pong in the building's lobby.

WMP, MSN Messenger... none of these is remotely close to on par with their PC cousins, are not good Mac OS X citizens and are even falling behind third-party alternatives.

It's ridiculous!!

Unfortunately, essentially everyone I IM with is on MSN.

All my IM people are on MSN too, a few have webcams (i don't), so I've been using aMSN lately because of its webcam viewer. Just noticed that Mercury Messenger has an update in OS X Downloads, I tried this before but couldn't get the webcam viewing working, is it any better now? Worth the switch from aMSN?

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Use Yahoo Messenger for video conferencing. You can add the Yahoo account to Adium. Nifty & neat.

I used to use Yahoo for video, but the picture quality and fps speed is better in aMSN, and is apparently better in MSN generally over Yahoo Messenger.

Roz Ho sez "New MSN coming in the next few months." If the picture floating around the net is to be believed, MSN got a rewrite and seems to have a few features people have been asking for.

IChat all the way -- I love have the bubble and the fact that I am on the other side of the chat relative to the other person/people in the window.

I use IChat for AIM, ICQ, and Jabber with MSN transport from jabber.dk -- the most stable jabber server

Adium... only one of the multiple protocol IM apps that I like (and I paid for Proteus!) I wish I could get the iChat + Jabber thing working... I've tried several times and only get partial results, #($* it! Haha.

Adium. Once in a blue moon, if some special need arises, iChat. Tried to get MSN to work (not for me, though; for a friend who can't find her way around Adium, and just wants her MSN to look like it always does on Windows), but it keeps telling me I need to download and install a newer version, though the one I have is the newest...

95% of my contacts are on Yahoo... but I can't stand using Yahoo Messenger. For one, it hasn't been updated in what... years?? And it has also been the only program I've ever used on the Mac that gives me consistent problems. It crashes non-stop... at random... even if it's just sitting there open... not being used. Or right in the middle of a conversation.... all of the time.

I've all but given up on Yahoo updating it... they don't seem to be interested in supporting the Macintosh on most things they do.

Actually it is a firewall issue. However iChat can get around it because it has access to the servers AOL uses for transfers between people behind firewalls. Adium can only connect directly to the person due to gaim's limitations, which is why transfers between people behind firewalls often fail.

They fail pretty often for me too, even when neither I nor the person I'm trying to send/receive files to/from is behind a firewall.
