I am looking for something to improve my memory on my ibook g4. I have the one with 30 GB, but I have recently gotten a new iPod that holds 30 GB. I'm looking for a way to update the GB and get something that lets me have enough for my music and a couple other programs. I was looking on noblepcs.com and they have a lot of hard drives but I don't know what's compatible with a mac computer let alone an iBook. If anyone could tell me what kind of hard drive I could use to improve my amount of GB, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Look for a firewire or USB external hard drive. ("Memory" refers to RAM, not hard drive space.) They're plentiful, affordable, and work like a charm.

also, i'm pretty sure trying to open the ibook to replace the HD yourself would void the warranty. Maybe you could take it into an apple store and have an apple tech do it for you, of course you would have to pay more.

Hi there,

I recently upgraded the HDD and optical drive in my lab iBook (800 Mhz G4 version). It was an old EDU version that only had a CDROM , so it really needed the upgrade.

Definitely not a job for the faint of heart or impatient , but it worked well for me.

I looked through the database at xlr8yourmac to choose a HDD (I went with a 80GB 5400 RPM Seagate) and an optical drive (can't remember the model offhand).

I used one of the free guides on PBFixit and everything went smoothly. Gave the iBook a whole new life .

I have also heard that CompUSA will replace a drive for a flat $30 fee...

Good luck,

Any standard 2.5" hard drive that's 9.5mm high should work fine.

Secondly, what you are trying to do is replace the hard drive and increase hard drive space, not improve your memory. If you want to add more memory you'd need to shop for RAM.

Lastly, what everyone said about it being a tough job is correct. Unless you've done this sort of thing before, I recommend you either let someone else do it or go with an external drive.

Do you mainly use your iBook around the house or at work/school? If you don't do too much running around with it then get an external firewire or usb 2.0 hard drive. This is probably the easier solution since you just plug the drive into your iBook and you instantly have extra space available.

If you lug it around with you a lot then buy a new 2.5" hard drive and get them to install it at CompUSA or the Apple Store. This solution is more difficult because your iBook needs to be disassembled, the hard drive replaced, the iBook put back together, and finally all of your software transfered to the new hard drive.
