I guess this means many people (iPod users) are likely to be charged for features that should have already been there as I doubt we're going to see anything new in OS 2.0 from now on other than minor bug fixes.

iPod users would be charged for new features, anyway.

Maybe $1.99.

I'd like
• tethering
• turn by turn directions
• copy/paste
• none of the usual bitching in here when not everybody gets what they had hoped for

In that order.

I want:

1) Tethering. My contract is 6 GB data, and includes tethering.
2) Copy/paste
3) Flash

I don't care about MMS, but others do. I know many of you hate Flash. I don't love it either, but the bottom line is much of the net is dependent upon Flash. I really notice the lack of Flash when I surf on the iPhone. Yeah, it'd be very slow, but slow is better than nothing.

Cough, that was an observation regarding the absence of the notifications system which never arrived back in September (as promised by Apple) ... not a whine, I hope. I'm guessing that something like it will be in version 3.0 but will now never arrive for version 2.0.

I'm wondering how they'll play the backwards compatability with original and 3G iPhones if this is released as the OS with the next iPhone. If its fully compatible, the new iPhone has to have some decent new hardware to make an upgrade worth it over a 3G or original iPhone.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Tethering is a blatant source of customer rape, otherwise known as revenue for ATT. It's where you hook your iPhone up to your laptop to use as a wireless modem. Slower than dog ****.

Tethering would allow an outside machine (say your laptop) to use your iPhone's 3G network access, either via the USB cable (tether) or more likely, via bluetooth. In other words, tethering lets your iPhone act as a bridge to the 3G network.

I'd like:

1) GPS Turn by Turn Directions <- would be happy with just this
2) Tethering <- don't want it if it comes with extra charges. I pay for unlimited data dammit!
3) Copy/Paste
4) Run third party apps in background <- would like to be able to listen to Pandora or AOL radio and got look at email or surf web at the same time
5) Sideways texting
6) Sideways email

And if they give me all this i'd jump for joy.

Unfortunately, even if we get tethering, I have this bad feeling hardly anybody will end up using it because operators will price it entirely out of reach. It's a real bummer. Where I live now I have used another 3G phone to tether to my MBP and actually saw about 2 Mbps.

T-Mobile's iPhone contracts here in Germany up until February came with a free MultiSIM (a second SIM card on the same contract).

You could stick that into a USB stick and surf with your laptop at no extra charge at all.

And honestly, if 7.2 Mbps is too slow for you, you must see some FAST dog **** in your neighborhood.

I was comparing it to my wireless setup at home. 3G is much slower than that.

Oh yeah. Forgot about this. I keep turning my iPhone sideways when I read email, only to realize (again) that this is not supported.

My iPhone contract (6 GB data/month for CAD$30) already includes tethering.

That's why I'm so annoyed iPhone 2 doesn't support it. (I don't want to jailbreak my iPhone.)

I jailbroke my iPhone about a month ago. I restored it the other day because it was unstable as all hell. No matter what I did, some program kept crashing the springboard. Happened about 5 times a week, so I gave up. I thought I was going to be able to use the MMS program on cydia, but it wasn't free. Also, it still didn't support ATT Wireless.

Ha, that's exactly why I don't touch my iPhone.

That kind of crap would drive me nuts. I buy Apple products exactly because I don't want that kind of stuff to happen.

Can we just get landscape texting? Apple is failing at the basics. And how about push which was promised ages ago. Geez.

OK, how about some battery life? I mean seriously, my 2.5 iPhone is a battery HOG...the recharge time is fine AND I want more battery life....software update can improve that; and maybe part of iPhone 3.0 hardware too,
15" MBP, 2.66Ghz, 4 GB RAM
and....17" iMac C2D
and....Mac Classic II (still running well)
and.....a couple of homebuilt game machines and other ancient stuff like OS/2, BeOS, and Windows 2.0!

Release is very unlikely. These advance sessions are given in order for developers to start working on upgrading their apps and writing apps that make use of new features. The event is deliberately about preview, not release.

Other new features (from Giz): "Notes Sync, audio/video tags, live streaming, shake to shuffle, Wi-Fi auto login, Stereo Bluetooth, LDAP, iTunes account creation, YouTube ratings, Anti-Philshing, Call Log, Parental Controls, Media Scrubber, OTA profiles, VPN on demand, Languages, YouTube subscriptions, YouTube accounts and Encrypted profiles. Also, auto-fills. The biggest addition here is probably Stereo Bluetooth A2DP support."

Funny typo in AppleInsider Live Coverage.
