What is Perian? Why does it sometimes fail when I open iTunes? Why should I update it?

By the way, it's something you (or another user of your computer) would have installed. Perian doesn't come with the system or anything.

Tiresias >> Perian is basically a bundle of video codecs that allow you to play different types of video file. I personally like it b/c with this one install I can watch most of the video types I want to.

On the same note though, VLC supports just about every type of audio and video, it just has an ugly UI. Try out VLC if you're looking for a video player to play everything.
