I want to convert some videos I have that are AVI's for iDVD output, and I have gotten it to work, but the quality is really blocky (I was using Mpeg4ses)
Does anyone have any good ideas of what codecs and at what rate it would be good for audio and video? thanks

So you want to convert AVI files to a format that you can import to iDVD, correct? If that's the case you don't want to convert it to MPEG-4 as you'll lose heaps of quality on it.
It's possible that you can import the AVI file directly to iDVD if you have the right plug-ins ( DivX and 3ivx).
When you have the AVI file open in Quicktime and get info (Cmd-I), what does it say for 'format'? You can also open it in VLC and get info there and see what it says.

here is ffmpeg i dont know if you have seen it or not or tried it, but it has the ability to author video ts and compress video ts files so that they will fit onto even a cdr with suprisingly good quality it has auto croping, and it has many different codecs that you use does a great job and it is 100% free. I like to use mac the ripper to decode my dvds and then compress them from there.
