Why can't I change my Handbrake icon?

So I love Handbrake, and it's GUI is really clean, but every time I look at it's icon i can't help but cringe. Seriously, the icon is the equivalent of a car crash. The thing is though, when I go to change the icon, it changes to a white rectangle with the word 'ICNS' written on it, rather than being the icon itself. I'm not sure if this is something the developer doesn't want you to do, or if it's my Mac.
Any help appreciated
Thanks, Will.

What are your steps for changing the icon? Perhaps you are not doing it correctly. You should be copying and pasting into the Get Info window.

or if you got any .icns file (which you can 'create' by exporting the icon from Candybar), you just dig into the Handbrake resources and once you have replaced the HandBrake.icns file, the application would show the new icon. Of course this requires more steps than ibook_steve's procedure.
I have tried to replace the icon and did it with no hassleā¦
If you want to give this .icns file a try, download it here.
Then proceed as usual, right click (control+clic) on Handbrake's app icon --> show package contents --> go to Resources, paste there the HandBrake icns file.
