Use DVD on 'old' iMac to install s/w onto new iMac

I've discovered that some software that I want to install onto my new 27 inch iMac, is only available on DVD. I have an old iMac with a DVD player. Is it possible to use (cross-over ethernet cable or something else?) the DVD in the old iMac to install onto the new iMac?

you should might be able to do it with a firewire cable. You might have to use firewire target disk mode.
at the very least, someone here can tell you how to make a disk image of the dvd on the imac, put on a thumb drive, and install from there.

I don't think I've seen copy protection by checking for the DVD for a few years now. In any case, installation from the discs should be possible - it's the checks at start that might give you problems, if any.

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

You can get an external DVD drive really cheap at places like Newegg or Amazon. Or you could take the drive out of your old iMac and put it in a case (say from OWC) so both computers could use it.

Doing Target disk mode should work for DVD as well. You can get a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter, and then, depending on the old iMac, you need to also have a Firewire 800-800 cable, or a Firewire 800-400 depending on how old your old iMac is.
