Pittsburgh Business Times has revealed that Apple is the mystery tenant for the first building in a mixed-use development park known as Three Crossings. The company will rent approximately a floor and a half of the 53,000 square-foot building with Rycon Construction, the builder, occupying the other half as its new headquarters. Apple's intentions are not known, but the company does have a presence on the campus of local Carnegie Mellon University.
The building, expected to be finished this fall, is located in the historic Strip District in Pittsburgh, traditionally a home to mills, wholesalers, and factories due to its position on and near the Allegheny river, but now is more of a historic market district, with former warehouses being converted into shops, restaurants, and nightclubs -- though some manufacturers remain. The neighborhood got its name from being a relatively small, thin strip of land -- consisting of just three main roads and various side streets, and occupying only a square half-mile of land.
Apple did not comment on the lease, but has some staff at the Collaborative Innovation Center at Carnegie Mellon, and had been seeking a large office space in the city, real estate sources told the newspaper. Owner Oxford Development had refused to reveal the name of the company that leased the space since March, though it noted that the building was fully leased.
