I don't know a whole lot about what is going on in Darfur, so I went to hear Nick Cloony (father of George Cloony) talk about this issue.

Posting this here because this is clearly not a politically partisan issue. In fact, Cloony applauded this administration and their support, and implied that Clinton was late in addressing the last publicized genocide in Bosnia.

Essentially, this is a Muslim on Muslim conflict between parts of Sudan, the genocide being directed by a leader with ties to Bin Laden. 100s of people are killed in a day, this is a very sad human tragedy.

According to Cloony, where we're at is that the US is willing to support this issue, and the plan is to get a UN-run army to help protect the Sudanese being killed. The thinking is that it can't be an American-led army or else this would stink of colonialism. The problem is with funding on this bill that has already passed. The hold-outs are Russia and China.

However, with some political pressure, Russia and China could cave like they did for the recent North Korea crisis. The purpose of Cloony's visit was to inform and encourage Americans to ratchet up political pressure on this issue - not because arms need to be twisted and people convinced, just because making this a slightly higher priority might help.

Like I said, I don't know a whole lot about this issue, but I'm hoping we can talk about it here in a non-partisan fashion, and I'm hoping that I can learn a little more about it here as well.

It's primarily a racial conflict - Arabs versus black Africans. The Sudanese government is completely Arab-dominated, and has been supplying and encouraging Arab militias known as Janjaweed.

Thanks for the link. Why do you think that this issue is not something people talk about more often? Do you think people view Africa as a sort of lost cause, too depressing to think about?
