i have a file i need to read; any idea of a shareware/freeware app to open this?

Try to open it with AppleWorks.

If you don't have AppleWorks, try Tex-Edit

I'd recommend BBEdit.

SimpleText uses the core systems text capabilities. I don't believe it can open more than 32K of text.
