There IS something there if I put my head down to the keyboard. Realistically you aren’t going to hear anything.

How loud are fans? How much do they come on?

Battery life? Powerpage is reported a really bad 2.5 hours....

Anyone compared the screen to the latest rev 17" PowerBook (1680x1050 screen)? The 17" got much brighter in the last rev, I wanted to know if the MacBook is equal or brighter.

Moderately warm. I really wish I had one of those laser temp readers. I have a friend that has one. I may borrow it from him tonight to get some accurate readings.

The bottom left speaker is moderately hot with the right being a fair amount cooler. Not sure what is in there to cause that. The top of the system is just warm. This is after 43 minutes of zeroing out the hard drive. The hottest location is behind the RAM bay. No doubt the location of the CPU. The optical drive is barely noticeable as I'm installing the OS its mildly warm to the touch.
The good news is the hard drive (Left of the touchpad.) appears to be away from any major heat source so drive failure should be less.

This is in contrast to the iMac Core Duo, which has the CPU in a socket.

Don't know about the CPU because I just got my baby. Don't want to crack her open just yet. (Even though I have the tool to open it in my kit.)
Battery life is being blown out of proportion. I was getting 4+ hours at 50% brightness, WIFI on (Not connected to anything. Didn't even know I had it on.), BT off, and performance set to normal. This is on a first charge without calibration. I wouldn't be at all surprised if you end up with 5 hours for formal usage. Watch as better drivers come down the line and even better battery life occurs on these things. Remember. Gen 1 of the Intel transition. Things will get better.

fans are a nonissue. 45 minutes of formatting the drive and I can't hear a thing.

Overall score of 71.80 on xbench for my 2.16 with 7200 rpm drive. The machine is far cooler than I previously imagined it would be. Speakers are equally tepid. I'm getting twice as many networks than I did with my 1.33 ghz 12" powerbook. Can't really write much about Final Cut Studio until my crossgrades arrive.

Grr. Seems the processor upgrade to 2.0ghz on feb 14th somehow bumped my order right to the end of the line. Estimated ship date is March 16th now. Time to make some calls to Apple. No wonder mine didn't ship when everyone elses did.

Is there any program like this NHC for OSX? It really helped out my Thinkpad when I lowered the voltages. Maybe since we are on intel now it might not be too far in the future till we can milk the most battery life out of these babies.

The left and right edges of the screen seem to be dimmer than the rest. Anyone else notice this on theirs?

Speed is great. Small and light. Not liking the dpi coming from a 17" 1440x900.

Do you have the horizontal lines problem that affected the last generation of 15" PowerBooks?

So I've been reading these forums, salivating because all of you lucky folks have gotten your MacBooks...

I ordered a 1.67 (now a 1.83) and am happy to report that Apple has finally authorized my credit card! So perhaps there's hope for us 1.83 people of getting our MacBooks this week...we can only pray

Let's play spot the Windows users... wizards?!

FWIW, the top left speaker area gets hot on all Al Powerbooks when it is being charged.

The RAM bay is hot(ter) on all Al 15" PowerBooks too.

It isn't surprising for the MBP to be the same in those aspects.

regarding the dim-edges on the display... It's a widescreen. You're looking at the exact center and seated in the middle of the screen (unless you have some kind of crooked neck). Move yourself to the left or right (don't raise or lower your head), and those edges seem slightly brighter. Nothing unusual and certainly no defect.

A few thoughts:

The magnetic power connector is awesome. It is stronger than I thought it would be, which almost encourages one to pull on the cord since the head is pretty small.

The trackpad is considerably wider than in the past at just under four inches, a full inch wider than my 667 TiBook. This is my first Book with double fingered scrolling, which is obviously fantastic if not revolutionary at this point. I imagine the wider trackpad will make that even easier and more flexible in the future. It also makes the button quite wide, which makes my long-standing single-mouse button complaint that much stronger. Lot of real estate for one button. But I've gotten so damn used to control-clicking it's not THAT big of a deal.

The power brick is really a brick, especially compared to my old TiBook's adapter. Not sure if this is different from AL PB adapters. Photo here comparing it to the TiBook adapter.

Other long-standing PB complaint carries through. I would really love to see an SD slot built into the frame, but I understand why they don't do it.

I am so looking forward to FrontRow. I keep my music on another server but I've always used my laptop for photos and as a slide show with my HDTV. Now I'll have to upgrade that to one with a DVI/VGA connector!

Hi folks,

MacNN noob here. Does anyone know the story with MBPs arriving at Compusa? Will there be some arriving for sale to the general public or pre-order only? I stopped into compusa in Madison, WI today and none of the employees had a clue.

Thanks,

Welcome to MacNN ibucky!

My personal experience with CompUSA would tell you to either order it online and wait, OR to drive 1.5hrs to Milwaukee to the Apple Store. Good luck either way you go. The last computer I bought from CompUSA was in 1998 when the first iMac came out. I have bought 4 computers since then and all were purchased through the Apple Online Store.

CompUSA is clueless and gets new Apple products a month or more after Apple stores do. At least, that's my experience in Iowa. The last time I was there trying to get Apple's FM device for iPods, they had no idea it existed, wasn't available to order, and it had been out for a month in our local Apple store already.

I'm heading to Milwaukee on Tuesday for a job interview. I think I'll stop by the Mayfair Mall on my way home.

darcy,

Thanks for the info. The consensus seems to be to stay away from compusa so far.

As a former CompUSA Mac department manager, I'd say that it does matter which store you're going to as to the service you'll get. Where else could sell you a 9600 with no video card no ram and no hard drive at a better price so you could install whatever you wanted? That said, my store was before the "Apple Store within a Store" thing and certainly before the Apple Store. I would guess that if there's an Apple Store nearby, they will get all the strong Mac-loving applicants.

Apple Computer, Schaumburg, IL (just outside Chicago) has them all over the place today.
I asked how many they sold, and the guy wasn't sure.
Glad I ordered my Macbook online - I was FIRST on the store list. No call yet, even though they have them in.

Just got my MBP 2.16 about 3 hours ago (had to pick it up from Fed Ex office since they delivered it a day earlier). Anyway, first impression is that it is very sweet. Installing memory was easy (after I ran to Radioshack to buy a phillips 00 screwdriver). The hing area is the warmest. Screen is awesome (equal on both sides unlike a previous comment). I have been working it hard for the past 2 hours transferring, installing, updating all my software and backing up my website. As for speed, it is definately faster than my old Titanium 1Gz. The computer is also very quiet (even though warmer, it is alot quieter than my old powerbook. Hope everyone gets their computer soon.

Anyone in the UK received thiers yet? I preordered mine from a local apple center. It was supposed to be delivered today but they don't know when they'll arrive now. They've said Apple have told them within 3-4 weeks. I'd cancel and order direct from apple(at least that way I could track it online) if I hadn't put down a non-refundable deposit.

For your info:
Just received a shipment notice! I'm in Canada and mine is a CTO 1.67(1.83) with 1GB ram and French keyboard. Estimated shipping date was the 28th for me too... nice surprise !

What's a realistic estimate for regular shipping in Canada ? Anyone north of the border received theirs yet ?

1st post and 1st time mac user. Can't wait !!

I'm in Montreal, ordered my 1.83 Std Config on Jan 11, and just got my confirmation that it has shipped today instead of Feb 28. It says shipped after the cutoff so I guess it's going to sit there all day until the next cutoff tomorrow. Here's to hoping I get it by Friday, if not I'm going to have a really freakin long weekend of checking my tracking page.

How long was the total ship time for anyone who has received theirs yet, from start to finish?

Just FYI. I ordered the 1.83 MacBook on February 3rd. It was scheduled to ship on the 28th. I checked my order status on the 15th and called like everyone else and told them to go with the 2.0 upgrade. My estimated ship date never changed. I checked my order status on the 20th and it indicated that it had shipped and would be delivered on the 24th. That was the first surprise. I am sitting at my desk this morning and the MacBook is brought back by a worker at the front desk. That was the second surprise. I am a happy camper!

Hello There,
Now with so many people happily playing away with their new toys,
give us some information!
These things seem to be rather warmish. So what about fan activity, noise,
is the temperature in the lap-portability range?
Is the harddisk making intolerable noises?
What about the noise of the DVD player?
And, the hottest topic out there: battery life?
A few real world performance tests wouldn't hurt neither.
Comparison with applications on linux/weindows boxes?
Things like boot time, shutdown time, suspend-to-ram, suspend-to-disk
might also give some information.

Would you like cream in your coffee sir?

It runs very quiet for my tastes. DVD Player is fairly quiet (Watched about 10 minutes of Serenity) Battery life is still being tested, I dont want to time it until I calibrate it at least once. More information will follow (some of us have day jobs )

This is my first post ever and I should note that I'm not a mac owner...yet (I am anxiously awaiting my 1.83ghz MBP). I have been following this forum every few hours and thought it was about time I add my two cents.

First, you all need to check this out http://www.intel.com/products/centri...atterylife.pdf. It explains a lot about the question that was nagging at me for a long time about battery life. Specifically look at the pie chart on page 3. We need to keep in mind that the new display is 67% brighter (!) but this comes with a heavy cost -- specifically to battery life. However, I never intend when I need to save battery life while taking notes in class to run the display at 100%, espeically considering the display alone (at least for a normal crappy display like on a dell, not the sweet display that comes with the MBP) consumes 33% of battery life.

The specs people are posting about battery life seem OK to me. I would love, like everyone else, to have 6+ hours of battery, but for taking notes or surfing the net simply by lowering the display I'm saving myself a decent amount of battery. Also, I read that the LiPo battery needs to, for lack of a better word, be trained. This is best done by following the advice Apple gives on their website which has been reproduced a few times in this forum. Only after this training cycle will the battery achieve full performance. So when I'm reading about people who first open up their MBPs and have 3:30 of battery at "normal" use from the get go this is fairly encouraging (at least to me; also, i recognize that others have posted worse batter life specs but I'm choosing to believe that the battery lasts about 3:30 as I have read this stat most often). Of course, take this all with a grain of salt because who the heck knows exactly what each person considers "normal" use.

As a side note, I can't wait for fuel cells in laptops (top of page 3 of the link above)!!

So in light of that page from Intel, how do you all still feel about batter life?

I'm still hoping Apple will ship my MBP 1.83 soon. I saw a few posts above that confirmed the 1.83s were shipping.

For whomever has confirmed shipping on the 1.83, did you order a standard config. and when did you order? I must have checked my order status 100 times already -- each time more and more disappointed. I want to play with my MBP already

Are those results correct? That score seems a bit high, doesn't it? Not a bad thing necessarily, but a bit odd still.

I too am anxiously awaiting my MBP 1.83. I'd sure like to hear what they have to say about it. Also, my credit card has a "pending" charge on it from Apple. I guess that is just a false alarm to check on my funds and that it still hasn't shipped.
