I never realized how slow the thing is until I borrowed a friend's Que! Fire drive, which still only reads at 24x, but is able to extract audio at twice the speed of my internal DVD drive. Is this a driver issue? Are there any patched drivers that can help? Would downgrading help?

I believe the speed difference is because firewire is waaayyyy faster than the ata bus your drive is on. It has nothing to do with drivers. IMHO
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

The drive should be a 5X DVD 40X CD.

Firewire is not faster then the ATA interface for this, since neither drive maxes the bus.

I should add some info.

When grabbing the 1st track off of a cd, I'm only pulling 650k/sec. It will get up to 1.1mb/sec towards the end. As far as I can remember, it has always been like this. It seems like an unacceptable number to me.
