T-Mobile's support for unlocked iPhones has now been officially detailed, reports tmonews. Although the carrier does not sell new iPhones to customers, it has been keen to cash in on iPhone users with unlocked devices, or who off contract with their original carrier. From September 12, T-Mobile retail staff will be give in-house training on how to set up iPhones for customers wanting to take up one of its Unlimited Plans for unlocked iPhones.

T-Mobile plans to issue staff with iPhone 4S demo devices and is also set to add T-Mobile-centered apps to the iTunes App Store. Among them will be new iOS versions of myAccount, T-Mobile Visual Voice, and T-Mobile TV. T-Mobile's strategy is based around a model whereby it can offer customers attractive pricing on plans as it does not have to subsidize the cost of the iPhones within its plans. It claims that heavy data users can save as much as $50 a month with their plan versus the equivalent AT&T plan. T-Mobile reiterates that it won't be unlocking iPhones for customers in store, but for customers who can buy an iPhone outright, the plans are certainly competitive. However, from a coverage perspective, the company will need to complete a network refarming process that will deliver 3G speeds to the newly supported devices. First on the list of cities to get the necessary connectivity due to be delivered in the fourth quarter include Seattle, Las Vegas and Washington, D.C. Supported iPhones for T-Mobile will include the next iPhone, the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 4.

I T-Mobile seriously wants to capture a slice of the iPhone market, they'll need to also support the iPhone 3GS. They can't stop with the iPhone 4.

Just remember you're paying $50/month for 2G service. So regardless of how many gigs of data they give you, you probably won't be able to use it all anyways.

They are re-farming their towers to be compatible with existing iPhone frequencies.

So you will not just be limited to 2G.
