I'm looking to purchase a scanner for photos, some of which are quite old (i.e., looking at flat beds). The end result is print. The Canon CanoScan 8600F seems to have received positive reviews and is moderately priced. Any suggestions for a better scanner?

What level of quality do you need?

Generally: look at Epson scanners. I have heard good things about them, even about the cheaper models.

If you are scanning slides, you might run into trouble earlier with a cheaper scanner than by scanning prints.
