I've finally upgraded from Tiger to Leopard.

When I was running Tiger, my external drive would only make read/write noises when it was actually being used. It would goto sleep after a period of inactivity.

In Leopard however, even after disabling Time Machine, the drive it's constantly spinning and whirling and making noises. It doesn't sleep - which is really making me nervous, considering it's my backup drive.

Is there something going on in the background? Does Leopard treat external drives differently from Tiger?

Thoughts/Solutions/Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Is it indexing the drive? (Check spotlight to find out.)

That's what it was.

It was Indexing. Apparently it was indexing forever and wouldn't give an estimated time. It finally finished. I understand if the problem persists, installing the updates will resolve the indexing issue.

Sorry for the noob question and thanks for the quick response.

A new Leopard installation will take a bit of time to index the drive. Glad it finally settled down.
