I have been using adium for AIM for a long time, but it has never worked well for file transfers for me. I end up switching to ichat or the official client when I need it.

Ah I seem to remember transfers being crap for AIM in general and you're right Adium doesn't like them, neither do I though. Stupid 'direct connection' rubbish.

One option that I liked in the official client was the ability to automatically accept file transfers. Chax added this to ichat so I am happy there as well. It came in handy when I wanted to IM myself files from class, or when friends sent me things and I wasn't at my computer.

Yes, very useful extension for Adium, I haven't found anything better for any other program/platform.

Adium is free. If it wasn't I wouldn't use it. I doubt they're making any money off of it at all apart from donations. Growl would also need to be ported.

Adium will never be released for Windows. What makes Adium, well, Adium, is the Mac only features it has that Cocoa gives it for free.

I do not use MSN through Adium but for AIM you go to preferences and it says emoticons.

Try the Chax plugin for Ichat it enables tabbed chat conversations plus many more features.

Not as awesome as your spelling.

The only thing that is similar about Trillian is that they're both multi protocal IM systems. They are in no way the same. Trillian does not allow you to easily customize the feel like Adium does and the "pro" version also costs money. Trillian's updates are over long periods of time and generally they just release all their new features into a new build which also costs money again.

Miranda is the closests thing to Adium on the PC side but it takes quite a bit more tinkering to make it look just right.

The only problems I have with adium are more cosmetic, other than the file transfer problem. On any protocol I use I (frequently actually) get a crash while attempting to send files. Its not only isolated to AIM, which I would have expected (the AIM protocol is horrible).

Other than that, I dont like how the theming only themes the actual message window. I would -much- rather it theme the entire window, the text box and everything. It makes a dark theme look kind of.. weird, when the text box only has white.

I've also had problems with a few darker themes causing text to become black on a message-box theme, something of which I am still running into problems resolving. (In fact, if you actually know a solution for this that'd be great!)

Really though I love the way the contact lists can be themed and well, blended in with the theme you currently have. It makes for a very nice messaging client. I also like its easy support for Google Talk... which has become my more active IM client as of late.

The growl notifications rule, I catch messages when I'm full screen or not paying attention to the bounces at the bottom of the screen when I'm working on something hard.

Trillian and Adium are VERY different. Trillian actually uses plugins with licensed code from each of the operators (MSN, AIM and ICQ are all licensed protocol usage). Their Jabber/IRC and so on protocols are all standardized. Adium uses the GAIM library, which is also used in GAIM (of course), MirandaIM and a few other clients. Adium seems to be the best use of it, mostly because of the Cocoa interface. Gaim is uglier than sin and Miranda is very buggy still, not to mention still very hard to skin when it comes to "making it pretty." Miranda is also only on windows.

Adium makes me happy, that about sums it up

Is there any way to be able to see the personal messages of your msn contacts in adium? other than the lack of personal messages, its a great app.

This will be supported once the MSNP14 branch is finished in Gaim. We've been told that "it hasn't been forgotten" but their priority is getting 2.0 out the door.

Not many. Last I heard the total is somewhere around $1000, so if I wanted to make money directly* I'd be a lot better off mowing lawns

I'd like to know too...

Personal Messages is a interesting feature of MSN... I'm using Mercury (last version 1.9 RC1) that supports Personal Message (MSN) and custom emoticons (MSN). It's great!

It's possible to see personal messages if you log into Jabber and have MSN set up within that. I'm certain that jabber.org.au works. Mind you, there will be no filetransfer. But buddyicons finally work correctly (i've always had problems with those on the MSN protocol in Adium)

The status of file transfer in 1.0 is something like this:

AIM:
Sending/receiving images should work
Sending/receiving files should often work, depending on network configuration. Graham Booker has been improving this recently (two crash fixes related to it in b21)

MSN:
Sending/receiving files should work, but very slowly, because the transfer is proxied through the MSN server.

Yahoo:
Not sure

Jabber:
One of the three file transfer methods I know of is supported. The focus now is on getting support for Google Talk's new method, since it seems to be quite effective. Unfortunately it's undocumented so far, although we expect that to change.

In 0.89.1 the status of file transfer is "basically broken".

uh, yeah, its great - except for what it does to the formatting
of the OTR key file is hellish enough for me to stay with the
"production" version. i dont have the patience to play the game
of keep relaunching to try and figure out where to paste the
old keys.

Yes. I would keep a copy of 0.89.1 on your computer as well in the event that any of the beta builds give you trouble.

Note: Backing up a copy of the folder ~/Library/Application Support/Adium 2.0/ before using betas is a good idea.

Well, a beta is a development release and may contain bugs. I have not had many issues. Your experience, however, might be different; therefore, keep your old 0.89.1 around. If you have problems with the beta then you can have something to fall back on. This is just common sense when using a development release.
Change your world and you will change your mind.

I've always used the beta versions of Adium and rarely have I had any problems. The one I do recall, I submitted an error report and had a response to within 20mins. Great work!

The debug window is for debugging (it IS a beta), and there isn't a preference for the dock badging.
