Hi,

Just picked up an open box iBook from Circuit City and was wondering what's the best way to clean the LCD?

With the power off, if you hold the screen at an angle, you can see that somebody obviously wiped it with a wet cloth or something to clean it. There are those "streaks" covering the whole screen.

There are no scratches, just those streaks. None of it is visible with the screen on...only when it's off.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Ingredients: 1 cup of warm water

What You'll Need: 3 drops of facial cotton (avail. from most supermarket)
1 toilet roll (any brand)
Hair Dryer

Method:

1. Soak 1 of the facial cotton in the water and squeze off the excess water.

2. Gently rinse through the screen with the cotton to soften the dirt.

3. Using the dried cotton, gently wipe it in a fashionly manner until the dirt comes off.

4. Wipe the rest of the spill with the toilet roll.

5. Using the hair dryer, blow dry the screen (20-25 cm apart).

And there you have it. A nice blown-dry screen-wash. I do this all the time for my friends iBook. Its a beauty to look at mind you.

Are there any special coating on the screen?

I know that lots of people clean their computers with 99% alcohol (make sure the machine is off and cool to touch) but I'm not sure of the effect alcohol would have on any anti-reflective coatings. It's great for cleaning oily keyboards though!

Cotton balls? TP? Way too much lint. I use iKlear cleaning solution (approved by Apple) and their special, lint-free, non-static cleaning/polishing cloths. http://www.iklear.com/

iBook Screen Cleaners:

You can also use "Klearscreen". It has been tested and approved by Apple. Go to www.klearscreen.com for information.

Windex is a NO-NO!! Ammonia is harmful to iBook screens over time.

I wish somebody had told me about the Anti-Windex thing... I must have cleaned my LCD with Windex 30-40 times by now.

Klearscreen and iKlear aren't available in the UK. Does anybody know something similar that is? It doesn't even have to have a capital K.

I could, but the shipping would be expensive. The damp cloth isn't that bad. I'm using AF Screen-Clene on my iMac. I wonder if that would be okay. It doesn't list the ingredients.

I happen to have it... and HECK NO, am I putting that on my screen...

it REEKS of something LIKE BUGSPRAY ... smells abrasive... might be ammonia...

and get this "Avoid contact, with skin, eyes and clothing"...

Umm... if its bad for me, no way in hell i'm using it on my ibook. I sprayed a little bit on a cloth, it bled through, and I swore it started burning my hand...

PC laptops sure....

I use some camera lens cleaner that I picked up at a local photography store. Doesn't leave streaks, and it gets rid of those marks that the keyboard leaves on the screen. Don't use alcohol based cleaners - they will dry out or yellow your screen.

I use KlearScreen, but when I run out, I use Fellowes PDA screen cleaner (Brain Wash). It comes in a packet with a wet cloth and a dry cloth, and works really well, leaving no streaks. It comes in a box of 12 and includes a little chamois cloth for spot cleaning.

LCD rules:
#1) NEVER use alcohol or ammonia products on LCDs
#2) NEVER touch the screen with bare hands
#3) NEVER close the laptop without a microcloth between the keyboard and screen
#4) NEVER talk about Fight Club .... oops...

Cleaning instructions:

Buy two 'micro-fiber' clothes. 3M makes them.

Clean the screen with a 'micro-fiber' cloth and nothing else ; maybe a drop of water if it's a sticky stain. Gently rub the screen over and over until it gets all the crap off. How clean it gets will depend on the damage that has already been done.

To preserve the screen, NEVER close the screen without placing a clean microcloth between the screen and keyboard. Do this by cutting the second microcloth so it covers the keyboard.

Clean your keyboard often. Clean the microcloth itself by following the directions that come with it carefully. If you travel often with your laptop then buy it a 'laptop sleeve'.

I learned this stuff the hard way. I have a 2 1/2 year old Pismo laptop and the screen looks like sand paper. I did all the wrong things with it.

My girlfriend bought an iBook six months ago, but this time I taught her all these things I learned. Her screen is absolutely impeccable. It looks factory fresh. Perfect.

G'luck.

Well, I use reguler vison glasses cleaner with a soft cloth, like the 3M previously stated.

I've got my iBook since last may and the screen has no scratch and looks brand new

It's the best way I've found and it's cheap and you can find it anywhere.

Funny, I've used Windex on both my Duos and both my iBooks. No problems
