EVGA announced that it is putting a new cooling design into effect with the next generation of Nvidia cards. The Maxwell-powered GTX 970 and GTX 980 will include the ACX 2.0 fan technology, an improvement over the company's previous generation, that is said to use less fan power, have a quieter sound signature and keep cards cooler.
The company states that it has complete redesigned the motor to allow for such improvements, including a new three-phase, six-slot design and "enhanced magnet strength." The new magnets allow for a maximum increase in fan speed by up to 150RPM. The blade count per fan has been upped to 11 blades, creating a better cooling capability with more pressure, without needing increase the speed of the motor or noise it creates.
Figures generated by EVGA state that the GPU records a 26 percent lower temperature when compared to the cooler on the reference design of the cards. The ACX 2.0 is also quieter than the reference cooler by 36 percent, while also lowering fan power consumption by 250 percent. Internal results also see GPU temperature drops compared to the ACX and reference speeds. At a fixed noise level of 36dB, temperature hits 64 Celsius, with ACX and reference recording 66C and 87C respectively.
As EVGA often does, the new Maxwell-based cards are offered in a number of SKUs. Four of the GTX 980 cards will feature ACX 2.0; the only versions missing it are a hydro cooler model, a stock version without ACX, and a super-clocked version of the stock card. Four versions of the GTX 970 include ACX 2.0, with four others lacking the new cooling technology, including a standard and super-clocked version using the first generation ACX, as well as a standard and super-clocked version with no ACX.
Pricing for the EVGA GTX 980 with ACX 2.0 starts as low as $550, with the GTX 970 models with the fan technology beginning at $330.

Why is this here? Apple isn't known for using top-of-the-line GPUs...this news bot is annoying, I read AnandTech and Toms Hardware for news like this, not MacNN.

It's because its over on Electronista, not MacNN. If you're checking "newest posts," in the forums, you'll see both.
