I believe you need to run it through an amp or pre-amp first.

Maybe I'll just take my PB down to the local guitar store and find out that way. So long as nothing is going to blow up.

It was just my understanding that the guitar itself doesn't output at a high enough level... could be wrong.

I've plugged my electric guitar right into the audio-in jack of my PBG4 1.25GHz without any problems. It works great. I picked up a cheap adapter to go from 1/4" to 1/8". Go nuts, it'll work fine.

Yeah, get a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter and plug straight into the audio in port (assuming you have one).
If you don't have one get an iMic or something that'll give you an audio in through usb.

Hi!
I've plugged my guitar into my Powermac G5's audio in, and though it has relatively high output it's just a bit too low. It's usable, but the signal-noise ration isn't really good. I haven't tried it in Garageband, but I assume it's the same systemwide. So if you have some REALLY high output humbuckers it might be OK, but with a Strat there's probably no chance. Might be different on a Powerbook, though. I bought a used iMic, but either this thing is total crap or mine is broken (crackle galore).

On my Powerbook, the signal is about 70% of a decent input, using not-particulary-hot humbuckers.
It's ok for practice, but for playing and recording I rather use an audio interface.

True enough, with weak single coils you might get a bit of noise.
I'm using p90s which tend to output more than even humbuckers.

Hi!
Would it be considered hijacking this thread if I added some questions regarding sound interfaces?
First of all, is the iMic really crappy or is it just mine? And then I'd like to know if a firewire interface is worth the extra bucks compared to an USB device. FW interfaces seem to be 400€+ only, but on the other hand I somehow don' really trust USB.
