Glider Pro is a great old Mac game, which the author released as freeware a few years ago. Unfortunately, the OS X version kind of sucks, and it's much better if you can run the OS 9 version in the Classic environment. Also unfortunately, the author's web page seems to be down lately, but it might be mirrored somewhere.

Do you have the Classic environment installed? If you PM me your e-mail address, I could e-mail you the OS 9 version, which I have on my hard drive. I think it should be okay, since the game is freeware.

I can't believe I didn't remember about Marathon. It used to be a commercial game years ago, but it got re-released as freeware at some point. It's a lot of fun if you're not bothered by old-school graphics.

To play on OS X, you need Aleph One, which is an open-source port of the Marathon 2 / Infinity engine to OS X:

Aleph One is a simple drag-and-drop affair - just drag it into the Marathon 2 or Marathon Infinity folder and it should just work. It doesn't work for the original Marathon, though, and unfortunately there's no ideal way to run the original Marathon on OS X. If you have the Classic environment (i.e., not an Intel Mac), you can run it in Classic, but it's a bit dodgy and mouse support doesn't work right. Probably your best bet is M1A1, a recreation of the original Marathon game for the Aleph One engine, but unfortunately the authors of M1A1 took a lot of liberties, and it just doesn't have the same feel that the original game had. M2 and MI are great in Aleph One, though.

I loved that game!
Me and my Rebel Cruiser took over every system except for Sol...stupid earth and their massive defenses. I spent hours trying to beat it but never could. Nothing like knowing that every single system I enter will have at least one bounty hunter after me.

I remember the first time I played Marathon. That game created such a perfect mood of "EEP, ALIENS!!!"

It was kind of the precursor to Halo, but stylistically it's a lot different.

Nothing like your enemy taking a shot at you, waiting about 5 seconds, making its noise, then taking another shot, all while standing completely still

I have a friend who got waaaay too far into the Marathon stuff, he'd read all the online docs and check out all the terminals, he was all about the story and stuff. He's played through Halo too and apparently there are a lot of similarities in the story line and stuff. Even the rocket launcher in Halo says "SPRNKR" on it (I think).

Marathon was great. It was so underrated and because it was on the Mac, it was dismissed as a "Doom clone". Sadly, it never got the attention it deserved.

I tried M1A1 on Windows. It's not bad, but I didn't play through the whole thing.

Halo is a direct sequel to Marathon, not just a side story. I read an article in one of the gaming mags a while ago where Bungie actually said it's the same character. Even the Marathon logo's in the Halo logo (look for it).

Wow, you're right. I never noticed the Marathon logo in there before.

Still, though, the character is pretty much the only commonality between the games. The pfhor, s'pht, Durandal, Lh'owon and all that good stuff are totally absent.

Um.... HELLO!?!?!?! No mention of enemy territory!??!?!?!

A massively multiplayer WW2 FPS game, with different classes just like Counterstrike, and it's TOTALLY FREE?!?!?! COME ON PEOPLE! This game rocks my socks off on a weekly basis. Admittedly, it is hard to get into, and to figure out the maps, but once you know whats going on it's a total blast!
