I just spent 2 hours trying to connect my Mac to a college comp - the network uses IPX, so it took ages to find a solution. (This was all to use a CD writer, btw).

Once I had connected it, the PC wrote the CD, and it sounds crap! There's jumps and skips everywhere! And I've no more money for another disk now! And it needs to be in the post today!

I hate my life.

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

Did you use an 80 minute CD-R? If so, that explains the skipping...

why would that explain the skipping?

AFAIK, the data density of 80-minute CD-rs is the same as 74-minute ones, they just write further out to the edges, no?

My 80-minute CD-R's play just fine - the full 80 minutes.

More likely, the CD was burned way too fast.

Audio CD's don't have the data redundancy that regular CD-R's have. What the CD-player can't read, just doesn't get read and is interpolated by the CD-player's error correction. (this is why chassis and spindle assembly, etc. have a large influence on a CD-player's sound, despite all logical appearances - being digital and all).

Burn too fast or on a crap burner, you get plenty of write errors. Couple this with crap error correction and a mediocre mechanism, and you get skips galore. 2x is the usually recommended maximum for audio.

Another possibility may be using colored CD-R's. They do weird things to the colored lasers used by CD-players and may result in errors as well, depending on the player. Use plain silver-colored CD-R's for audio.

All 80-minute CD-R that I've tried have not played correctly in either my Alpine CD deck, or my dad's Sony changer. They skip like there's no tomorrow.

74 minute CD-Rs, on the other hand, work perfectly well.

(appending to what I said in the last post...) and I've tried EZ CD Creator, iTunes, and Toast. None produce 80-minute CDs that will play in my car.

80-minute CDs work perfectly on my Alpine deck, my Sony SACD player, and on all my computers.

Burn speed?

I burn 80 minute audio CD's all the time for custom mixes, and they work fine in all 5 CD players I have access to (Discman, DVD, Laserdisc, DVD-ROM in the G4 and CD burner)

The main problem was trying to burn discs over a network: NEVER DO IT. Copy the files to the PC and burn it there if you absolutely have to.

How poor does one have to be to not get another blank CD-R ?!

Lol, no. I have more money. I just didn't have any more cash on me, and was meaning to go to the bank at lunchtime, the same time as posting my CD.

I got it done eventually, btw... the nice guy at Systems gave me a new CD (our networking staff at college are great - really helpful. The network's another story, though!), and I tried again. Turns out his FTP program was mangling my MP3s (It was set to Auto). I tried again with the command line program, and got them all copied, and it worked.

I think it was that, anyway (I couldn't check the MP3s on the computer, no speakers)... could have been the disk, but the software, while a horrible interface, seemed to work.

Just for the record, I don't really hate PCs, they just really annoyed me today. What should have been a 10 minute job took me 3 hours.

Well... I believe the official chart is as follows:

Burn a CD on any platform;

1. Mac user who knows how computers work, has even rudimentary problem solving skills, and can follow simple directions= as long as it takes the burner to burn, depending on CD burner speed.

2. PC user who knows how computers work, has even rudimentary problem solving skills, and can follow simple directions= as long as it takes the burner to burn, depending on CD burner speed.

3. Dolt user who doesn't know how computers work and always blames the tool for the bad job they do= 3 hours** as opposed to as long as it takes the burner to burn, depending on CD burner speed.

** Note: time level may vary dependant on what stage of helpless consumer-whore bias user has reached and/or stage of willful ignorance of the opposite platform and eagerness to be a total lunkhead using the opposite platform in order to reinforce for themselves very dumb preconceived negative points about the opposite platform. IE: an ignorant PC user would do things like transfer the files through FTP in ACSCII mode rather than binary mode and take several hours to blame the Mac for thier own lack of skills as well.

PC user on a mac = inserts the cd, tries to find a way to use a program to import all his mp3s into but complains, says macs are stupid, and gives up.

Mac user on a pc = inserts cd, accidentally overwrites it empty because the pc tries to format it, has no idea which program to import his mp3s with, no idea which other program he needs to organize them, and which other program to burn the CD

step 1: Mac dolt uploads binary data over IPX network to awaiting PeeCee w/CD-burner.

step 2: Mac dolt unknowingly burns an audio CD containing 'glitches'.

step 3: Mac dolt blames PeeCee

Being a PeeCee zealot is a fulltime job, nowadays.

At any given moment there might be thousands of instances of misinformation being posted by uninformed Mac-users...

but there's only one of me to go around.

I could use some help.

i don't like the chatty nature of IPX, and the infastructure needed for a proper network setup. Not to say it has its advantages, but overall i much perfer IP networks. just a personal thing
