i am about to order this in the next 5 minutes. i checked on apples specifications website, and they say that the pc100 144pin 256 chip WILL work, but i want to make sure the 133 will.....if you could reply as soon as possible, it would be much appreciated

EDIT: i already have an existing 256 and 64 in my pismo, will it be ok to add another 256? and replace the 64? or two 256 chips will be faulty? its expandable to 512, meaning only one 512 chip? hopefully i can add this other pc133. please get back to me as soon as possible

please please please show me where it says low profile...ive searched dozens of times......and i only see full size - the one i quoted in a previous post. if you could link me to the part number on the invoice they shipped you, that would be awesome. thanks

umm im not an expert on powerbooks.. but its interesting.. ive seen discrepencies on the max memory storage the pismo can handle.. apple says 512 yet every single mac retailer says 1gb..

in addition i know that the ram is installed in 2 slots.. the 512 module looks like 2 dimms leading me to believe that they ship 2 256s for that order

anyone correct me if im wrong
DOS Computers manufactured by companies such as IBM, Compaq, Tandy, and millions of others are by far the most popular, with about 70 million machines in use worldwide. Macintosh fans, on the other hand, may note that cockroaches are far more numerous than humans, and that numbers alone do not denote a higher life form. -- New York Times, November 26, 1991

Hi,

The Pismo takes max of 1gb or RAM in its two slots (512 each). 256 in each slot should work fine. The two slots need not have the same quantity of memory. (I have 512 bottom, 256 top)

Dont try to second guess it, go to a competent web memory site (I like Otherworldcomputing but there are others) and search for memory based on your powerbook model (Pismo Powerbook 2000 Firewire Rage 128 Mobility). That way you know you will get the right stuff.

Some things to be aware of:

lowprofile (physically smaller) will work in either top or bottom slot. If not lowprofile it may not fit in the bottom slot.

gettting to the bottom slot means removing the cpu motherboard, so be sure you feel competent to do it. it can be a little tricky reseating the board (you have to press pretty hard). if you dont feel comfortable by all means find someone who is and pay them to do it for you.

some memory does not play well together. so buy memory from a competent place where you can return if necessary.

you might want to be sure you have upgraded to the newest version of the boot RAM 4.18 (apple system profiler in 9 )

yes, some of the memory is PC 133 autoswitching to PC 100 depending on your system. again just buy from a competent site that will allow you to search by your model.

BTW, why do you want to buy 256? I just bought 512 mb of lowprofile memory for my Pismo for about $76 at otherworldcomputing. With Ram so cheap, you shoud max it.

Best wishes,

Rich (Pismo G3 500)

Yeah my 400 came with 64, and i bought a 256 from OWC. (TPW256LF) now they jacked up the price a little, and i found a pc133 on 18004memory.com for cheaper, so i was just wondering. ok, so thats great news...1 gb. now, i will replace my 64 chip im guessing now with a 512 to bump it to 768MB. the 256 is low profile, so put the 256 on the top and the 512 on the bottom? alright, rjt1000, looks like we'll have the same setup. nice, thanks for all the help, i really appreciate it. i was just confused because apple has it documented up to 512 and 256 per slot, and other reliable sources are telling me 1gb. rjt1000, could you link me to the $76 512? i was about to buy the $39 256. thanks again

spitty27

EDIT: i think i found it
512MB PC100 CL2 2-2-2 Full Size SO-DIMM for PowerBook G3 FireWire 400/500MHz(Pismo/yr2000) .Lifetime Warranty. (OWC100SO512328) more info... selling at $75.00
so which slot can hold the full size and which one can hold the low profile. shall i put the full size 512 on the bottom next to the cpu and the 256 on top closer to the hd?

thanks again

hi,

the 512 mb froim OWC is also low profile so it will fit in either slot.

but, best to put the 512 at the bottom so you dont need to pull your processor again.

yeah, RAM varies a bit in price day to day. but sounds like you found a good deal.

best wishes,

Rich (g3 pismo 500)

ahah...so could you link me to the low profile, cuz i only see the full sized 512 module that will go into my PB Pismo 400. the full size 512 will fit on the bottom slot along with the 256 low profile on the top? thanks again

i kinda need to know cuz if im getting the low profile, then ill put it on the bottom, if not, then i guess i put full size on top and 256 on bottom. please...anyone?

thanks again for all the effort.

Hi,

This is the link to the chip I bought, although the price is a bit higher now (RAM prices are volatile):

http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_It...OWC133SO512328

Yeah, I guess their description is a bit confusing, calling it "full size". But it does indeed fit in either slot--i have it installed in my lower slot. (Give them a call, if you like, to verfiy it would fit in either slot--thats exactly what I did. )

Perhaps "low profile" and "full size" are ambiguous terms, since they can mean different things in different systems. The chip linked above will fit in either slot--that is the issue. There are some chips that will not.

If your 256 chip will also fit in either slot, then you can install either chip in either location. It wont make any performance difference. But having the bottom slot maxed out is easiest, so you dont have to take the motherboard out again if you want to upgrade to a full gig.

Best wishes,

Rich (Pismo G3 500)

k i called up OWC and the rep said that the 85 dollar one is low profile, and the 75 is full size. i dont care which slot it is in, he said that since both chips will be from OWC, compatibility should NOT be an issue. the 256 will be on the bottom, and the 512 will sit comfortably in the top. thanks again for all your help.
