The past few days I've been getting some ".......blah blah application has unexpectedly quit"

First it happened with Mozilla a few times (build 1.6). I attributed this to general bugginess, but then had it happen several time with OS X's Mail app.

Now it just happened with ACDsee when switching to another folder (it starts to generate thumbnails whenever you do).

This is unusual. My machine is a Dual 2.0 G5 w/1.5gb of ram and a 9800 Pro retail which I've had since October. OS is 10.3.2. I ran the hardware test and it came up with nothing.

A few days ago I ran Diskwarrior. I also had Cocktail run all tasks.

Any ideas?

You could look at the crash logs for hints.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

I have been getting this problem since 10.3.5. Various apps, Apple and non-Apple, have been quitting and it is really annoying.

I am now starting to wonder if it is bad RAM.

probably stating the obvious but.....try repairing permissions. sometimes the weirdest things happen when they get out of wack. this simple procedure has cleared up numerous problems for me and i usually try to do it before and after any new installations..as well as when anything starts to go wrong. if you started getting this after installing new ram it might be that. bad ram also can lead to bizarre things...like i just found out with my G5 dual 2.0
good luck

I've noticed a pattern when this happens to me. 90% of the time that I've had unexpected quits, iTunes has been running in the background. Quitting iTunes doesn't correct the instability either - I have to log out or restart, and then the unexpected quits cease. I've sent in tons of reports to Apple as the problems happen, and it seems to happen less now.

I recently had this problem too. I rebooted and all was good again. Not sure what it was exactly. I hope it's not bad ram but that's always a possiblity with inexplicable system behavior.

I'm more inclined to the system requiring the fix permissions...
do that once a week, and run the cron scripts (if you use cocktail, it's easy)

Ever since updating to 10.3.6 I've had nothing but trouble with my PowerBook G4. I'm crashing randomly and the system becomes totally unresponsive. I even installed 10.3.6 combo update and things have just gone crazily wrong! In my daily routine of typing papers, downloading files, iTunes, Adium and maybe a few other progams my system crashes unexpectedly. I even got several kernel panics, 2 with the ugly black code and then another with the gray screen and all the foreign fonts. Blah blah blah... so anyway, I checked the crash logs and it says the WindowServer and my ATIRage extensions are causing the crash.

Okay, so what do I do? I reset my PRAM, PMU, RAM (took it out and put it back in), repaired permissions and the whole nine yards. Now I'm sure reinstalling OS X would fix these issues, but my other problem is my DVD/CD-ROM slot load drive won't spin the discs (that's another story).

Is there a way to install X on an external FireWire drive and then boot off that hard drive and install X onto my PowerBook? In other words, use that external drive as the image of the Mac OS X Install CD-ROM and install X over FireWire to my TiBook. I'm getting desperate!

Ipond: try this:

You might need to download the Combo update....but do an archive and install (re-install in your case) AFTER you have checked your disk (using Disk Utility or Disk Warrior, etc) and repaired permissions. The make sure you repair permissions afterward. If you have a bunch of haxies running, de-activate them before the install.

I always do this with major updates but slipped with 10.3.4 and it was never right. Good luck.

I'm not sure what im doing wrong, or right in this case, but i have never really had any of the problems listed here, now I know that i shouldn't be posting if i haven't had problems I just think it has to be something strange with something software running on the system.

I have a Powerbook G4 667, 768mb of ram and 30gb hard disk, and the last update that went horribly wrong for me was 10.2.2 but it was a piece of crap anyways. That being said, all my fiddley little slow wireless issues disappeared when 10.3.6 was released. (they occured after the 10.3.5 update) I hope you guys can manage to track down your problems, I've had 99% trouble-free computing from my system.

Just do all the usual suspect stuff and disable any modifications you have running on the system and see if that makes a difference, or check to see if maybe one of your peripherals is causing the issue.

10.3.6 has been a disaster for me.

but i made a huge mistake and just installed it from software update, without first repairing permissions, etc, and with a lot of other programs running.

so that said, when you mention downloading the combo update, can i just re-install over the install i did via software update or do i need to do something else? i do have cocktail and disk warrior.

and which combo update is it?

thanks much! i have the same pb, ti 667, 1 gig ram, so i'd like to get back to a minimal fan, minimal crash state.
I'm not a complete idiot, some parts are
missing.
