I don't understand why doom3 requires a G5. Considering som dual G4 systems will outperform a 1.6 ghz g5, and Doom3 is made by ID (ie, multiple processor support), I don't get it at all.

1) The linked article is from December 14th of 2004, so it is not entirely breaking news. Bust out the timeline diagram.

2) As far as I know, Doom 3 does not support multiple processors. But Glenda sez she has been running it on a 1.5 GHz powerbook with a 64 mb video card, and that it is playable. Since she's spearheading the Mac conversion, she's a reputable source. Minimum processor requirement is roughly 1.5GHz, whether it is a G4 or G5, but with a big honking video card.
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

If it truly does require a G5, it's because of the FSB. The slowest G5 is in the 1.6 GHz iMac, and it has a 533 MHz bus. That's more than 3 times the bandwidth of the two fastest G4s combined. But I'm betting they're just keeping the reqs high to avoid disappointing people.

If you look at the requirements (which were changed recently) Aspyr

or download the free Game Agent (which gives you the requirements and rates your Mac against them) Aspyr Game Agent (Free)

You will see that the requirements have been changed to you requiring to have either a G4 OR a G5

you're slightly off here: the FSB for ALL G5s runs at .5x of the CPU; 1600mhz CPU - 800mhz FSB

Don't try to outweird me, I get stranger things than you free with my breakfast cereal.

The new single 1.8 runs at 1/3 clock speed, 600 Mhz, I think.

Hydra is correct the FSB was purposely crippled on the low end PM and in the iMac G5. they are running at 533Mhz vs the dual G5 setup running at half the prcessor speed.

Bah, recommended is a 2.0 Ghz or better G5 and 128MB RAM. That isn't even an option for my iMac G5 20". Oh well, guess I will pass and continue on with WoW.

According to Barefeats the iMac set to its highest level wouldn't do too bad the only thing that would hould it back is its video card. Actually it would be interesting to see who it would perform compared to the PB with a better video card but a crap FSB.
