S80, C70 and C30 ?

I really like the new C70, always loved the original C70, a car 10 years old and still looking great.

The new S80 looks too much german for my taste, not bad if they had got clues from the OMG Mercedes-Benz CLS, but getting a audi-bmw mix is not my cup of tea.

Finally, the baby Volvo, the images available of the C30 don't xlr8 my heart… too much videogame-like look with huge rims, paints and so. It has some resemblance with the crappy fiat stilo… oh my !

So, what is your veredict?, mine, C70 hands down.

I LOVE the C70.

The S80 is real nice, but as you said, a bit to "audi" for it to stand alone.

On a side note, can anyone fill me in on the logo.. why is it a male symbol?

I like small cars so naturally I would choose the c30 but if they were the same size the c70.

Although I like the fact that their rear lights are unique, I still find them quite fugly and it puts me off from enjoying the overall car. The C70 is rather nice looking if I ignore the rear lights.

I think they care more about safety than looks.

Take away the gold bodykit and big wheels and that C30 is the production car. I think they could have done more with the front, it looks plain and doesn't look like the same design as the back of the car.

From the Splits in the panels you can tell that that C70 coupe is a 'trans top'. I don't think that Volvo have made a cabro before?

I won't deny that; it's why their station wagon design remained relatively unchanged for so long. I just wish they had one really sexy car to compliment the safety of their vehicles.

Very nice cars. I particularly like the S80 and C30. I almost bought a S40 before, but it was just out of my price range. So I decided on a fully loaded Civic. Kind of in different classes, but both were to my tastes.

The original C70 has a Cabrio version, but being honest the non cabrio model was much cooler IMO.

Sounds like European Fords are the only ones worth having. At least people are buying them, unlike the American models. And as another poster commented, Volvos are only Fords in the same way that an Aston Martin is a Ford.

Actually, it sort of does to some degree. Ford, Volvo, Jaguar, Lincoln, Mercury, all share common parts and to some degree, share common platforms. Lincoln and Jaguar for instance share platforms for many of their models ( which has actually proved to be a good thing for Jaguar but that's not really saying much ). The Ford 500, Mercury Montego sedans, and Volvo XC90 SUV are all built around a similar platform ( odd to have and SUV and a Sedan built from the same platform ? I dunno ). The Volvo S 40 shares a common platform with the Mazda3 and European Ford Focus. The list goes on.

Since the acquisition of Volvo by Ford only happened as recently as 1999, time will tell how the Ford cancer affects it's young subsidiary. But I can tell you this, the Volvo tank of the 80's died a long time ago.

Well, I miss the 200, 700, 900 series, they were really great cars, being the 850 - S 70 the last of a kind. And I hope all that people you can see everywhere with their small 300 series have finally a good reason to get a new VOLVO.

BTW… it is about time to get a new Simon Templar's movie, Saint's car is here !

They may be jucky but they're great compared to the American fords. The euro Focus for example has a chassis that is the benchmark for it's category.

Yeah but this thread is about design. You can't think that the chassis and engine make the design the same.

And before you call someone a fool, maybe you should do you're research a little better. There are in fact Volvos and Fords that do share the EXACT same platform.

There is even a commercial out now where Bill ford himself is talking about how great Ford and Volvo are together, and they even show a Volvo and Ford SUV that is almost exactly the same in design and engineering.

There's a certain stigma attached to owning a Volvo. The same one that you find with Saturn.

It's the car you buy for the person that is likely to wreck the damn thing.

Here in Florida, fully half of the car accidents involve Saturns (young folks) and Volvos (old folks).

If my wife was a lousy driver, I'd buy her a Volvo wagon.

Do you honestly think I don't know this? But you said it was a Taurus, which is a shitty old car.

I was at an auto show last year and saw some Volvos there and they were really nice. I really liked the instrument panel.

Yes, the 1800 had a great successor in the 480, but am I wrong or it (480) never went to America ?

If that C30 comes to the US next year with roughly 200hp, and without that gold trim, for around $23k, I'll be buying it right around the time I graduate from college, and I'll be ahead on payments for my Elantra. I love driving smaller cars, which makes the utility of hatchbacks very tempting. This would be a perfect Elantra replacement for me.

The engine side is really easy, Ford sells a Focus ST with a five cylinders VOLVO engine (225 hp) and a VOLVO six speed manual transmission here in Europe; the price tag is hardest since the Focus ST is 26600 € ($ 32000) and the VOLVO has to be more expensive.

I think the new Volvo convertible/cabrio c70 will have a triple section folding roof!

Most folding metal roofs in production today have just two folding pieces. The Mercedes SLK (2 seater roadster) was the first to mass market with a folding metal roof, but application of this to to 4 seater cars (like peugeot and Renault) meant serious design compromises, i.e. a wind creen that extended so far into the cabin, it went right over your head!!! A triple folding roof will get around this, but I bet it adds a bit of weight.

I have one of the SLK's - metal folding roofs are great for all seasons, but I might need to consider a 4 seater car soon. The volvo is definately a contender.

BTW: i really think the XC90 SUV/Off roader thing has changed perception of volvo brand, certainly in the UK, anyway.

I can't help but feel that's a lot of mnoving parts to go wrong. Also, if this thing was hit from behind with the roof folded down, I would hate to imagine the repair cost.

Still... It is probably the only folding metal roof car that has 4 genuine seats (before you say it -yes I have seen the Pug 307 - like I said - usable)!! As for the Pug 207, anyone with legs will struggle to fit in the back!!
