I just recently got a MBP and wanted to test the temp under max load (100%cpu). When I use yes/dev/null, the cpu spikes up too 100% on both cores but my speed just sits there at 1.0ghz. I thought it would also shoot up to the max. In which case would it go to max since I have been heavily using this and have never seen it go above 1.0 in any cases.

What happens when while running two yes commands you also generate some additional load like rip music with iTunes, play iTunes visuals, etc.?

If you are asking if anything else is running, the only thing is probably adium.

No, I'm suggesting you actually create additional load with other apps and see if the reading changes.

Ok, that explains it. My battery was dead on arrival and it matched one of the serials for the exchange program so I never really got to use the battery at all. The battery arrived yesterday so I need to go to the office and pick it up. I will post an update later.

update: it was because of the battery, it's running at 1.5ghz now and goes up to 1.8ghz when full load. The computer is much cooler too, it doesn't burn my hand when I touch the speakers now.
