mine is 2.16 C2D
room temp is around 74F, mbp is sitting on a desk w/o external cooling device. Each test was about 15 mins.
1st: (couple of Safari with iTune and msn):
Core1: 55C
Core2: 54C
Fan 1: 2200rpm(i think it is still very quiet)
Fan 2: 2200rpm
2nd: (iDVD, iTune, DVD, couple of safari with MSN):
Core1: 61C
Core2: 60C
Fan 1: 3000rpm (i can hear the fan, not super noisy, but kinda)
Fan 2: 3000rpm
I am not sure if this is considered to be "cool", so how about yours?

sry...i made mistakes, for the 1st load, it was only 51C and 52C for both Cores.

Under full load with both CPUs pinned at 100%:
Core 1 79.0 C
Core 2 77.0 C
Fan 1 5200 rpm
Fan 2 5200 rpm
Normal internet/mail/itunes usage:
Core 1 50.0 C
Core 2 50.0 C
Fan 1 3000 rpm
Fan 2 3000 rpm
This is a 2.33 ghz 2gb ram 120gb HD that still (IMO) gets too hot to use as a LAPTOP.

Room temp (20C/68F), on flat table, 2.33 GHz 15" with 120 GB disk:
idle: fans at 2000 rpm, smcFanControl temp reading at 42C/108F
max load: fans at 6000 rpm, smcFanControl temp reading < 80C/176F
Palm rests are comfortable. Bottom is warm, but not too hot. Perfectly usable as a laptop IMHO.

1. "Idle" use (email, web, listening to music): anywhere between 40-50C (depends more on what surface its sitting on), fans @2000 rpm
2. Heavy load (right now-- both Cores busy doing particle physics simulation): tops out at 75C, fans @6000 rpm. Even under heavy load, temp drops rapidly (to below 70) as soon as fans kick into high gear.
Whisper quiet during 1, jet-engine during 2. Just as Simon said, palm rests never become hot, and bottom is never too hot to use as a *lap*top.

smcFanControl ( http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/23049) will show you both a temperature (as reported from the cpu) and fan speed, and let you set the minimum fan speed to a value higher than Apple's stock setting.

Yes, the smcfancontrol allows you to adjust the fan speed and it also reads the temp, but for the details, such as the cores, hdds, ram, go download this temperature monitor.

but for a mbp core duo, both your config got pretty cool temp, isnt it? i have heard that c2d is much cooler than cd, but from your reports, i do not see it at all, because even mine at min load, it still stay around 50C (web + itune).

I'm not sure what you're comparing to. In my experience, in everyday use, my C2D MBP is cooler than my 3+ year old G4 PB.

My MBP C2D hovers around 49-51 C at idle and went up to 63 C while I was encoding an H.264 video. Fans topped off at around 5200rpm.

So far from what I'm seeing... C2D and CoreDuo are getting about the same temps. With SMC-FC, I get mid 40Cs with 3000-3500rpm fans with moderate use (iTuenes, Adium, Mail, Word, Powerpoint, sometimes Azureus). I assume since Apple finally turned on the fans on the C2D automatically compared to CoreDuo fans always running at 1000rpm, thats why C2Ds are labeled cooler.

This is all from my speculation. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Just as johnnie518 is saying, seems like cooler C2D's is caused by the fan min speed has been raised from 1000 rpm to 2000 rpm. Anyone that can confirm this?

That certainly helps, but it's not that alone. I used smcFanControl to set my rev A MBP to 2000 rpm min fan speed and it still idles roughly 15C higher than the rev B.

I've seen many MBP CD's (after week 25-26) that had idle temps not far from what you are seeing with your C2D, Simon. I think some of it might be due to better application of thermal paste than the first revisions, and the fact that the MLB's in later revisions have been changed (as the need for new install dvd would prove).
My 2.0 CD idle'ed at 60-65C before I found smcFanControl. After that I've used it so set the fans to 3000 rpms which give me idle temps in the low 40C range. Currently, the comp is in for MLB replacement due to the whine, so hopefully the new revised MLB (and proper applications of thermal paste) will further reduce my idle temps.

After 3 days my C2D is about 8-10 degrees cooler then my cd. Speed 2.1 versus 2.0

Bernt, I was referring to the processor speed. The minimum speed for the C2D is 2k the CD was 1K. I would like to lower it to 1k when idle but I can not. The unit really does run cooler.

It doesn't really matter what the CPU temperature is. What really matters is how hot the external case gets, i.e. how well heat is removed through the back and bottom. Is anybody able to compare between rev a and rev B? what I hated about my macbook pros rev A was that they all got way too hot on top - keyboard and palmrests.

My experience is that the lower the temp of the CPU, the lower the temp on the external casing. So because the C2D CPU temp is lower, so will the casing temp. But this is something you also can achieve on rev a MBPs with adjusting the fans.

It seems like my week 11 MBP is still cooler that the C2D. I idle at 40-44C without smcFanControl and at 34-37C with smcFanControl. With Photoshop, Fireworks, Illustrator, Flash, Adium, Skype, Fetch, Mail and Safari it works at around 50-60C

I have compared my rev A to my rev B and the palm rests are considerably cooler on my 2.33 GHz rev B compared to my 2.0 GHz rev A. I actually started a thread about it a few days ago.

I think this is getting to the real crux of the matter: the temps of 70+C I see under full load appear to be not very different from what the revA MBPs were getting. However, under such load, I have not once felt the palm rests to be any warmer than when the machine is idle. The only part of the top surface of the laptop (when open) that feels noticabley warmer is the strip inbetween the keyboard and the screen. I'm willing to bet that the changes in the rev B go beyond just firmware/fan speed changes, but also some physical changes to how the heat dissipation is done.

I would like to know the temps you guys are talking are with the MBP plugged on charging or not.. Coz i suppose that would make a difference too. My MBP C2D 2.16 when idle runs at 52C i.e. when plugged on ... And it is really hot at the bottom left end.... Isn't it too much ?

I have just been chatting and surfing the web...
I am also not charging...using only battery
Screen brightness around 5-6 clicks from the bottom...and no keyboard light
no cd in the drive, no external drives...just the machine
