I've been using Transmission for about a year or so now and I love it. It's free, and it does what I want. But lately everytime I've used it it has been really slow downloading, the ports are open though. It also drags my internet connection to a crawl yet is only downloading at 20-30kb/s. I quit it and bam my internet connection is back up to speed.

Any ideas what's going on?

Take a look at what your upload speed is and then limit it to around 10 - 15kps slower than its max.
Try that.

generally limit your upload speed to 85% of your up bandwidth and your download speed to 95% of your down bandwidth

I have similar issues with this app. I have 15mbit/2mbit and with caps at 10% of that the rest of my port 80 traffic periodically stops for half hour periods. Someone suggested that it was just a coincidence and that it was really a DNS issue, but after manually adding some DNS servers it still happens.

You could be allowing too many connections per torrent. Too many connections in either direction, or cumulative in both, duplicated across even just 4-5 simultaneous torrents, may hose your connection.

I'll have to look into it, thanks for the tip.
