For the last couple of days I've noticed my MacBook running at full speed with the fans going and I'm not doing anything intense. A visit to Activity Monitor reveals that a root process "syslogd" is using up massive amounts of the CPU. I don't know what it is or how to make it go away. I think one of my apps must be activating it but I don't know how to find out which one.

Help?

I've managed to fix the syslogd thing but now Dock is running like crazy, anyone have any idea why that could be?

I don't know how you managed to bork the Dock.

Did you try this to fix the syslogd hog ?

(1) Log in as an Administrator (i. e. the box `this user is allowed to
administer this computer' needs to be checked).
(2) open Terminal and type the following commands, followed by enter:
(3) sudo -s
(4) cd /var/log/
(5) rm asl.db

-t

Edit: added clarification

Hmmm...I had this issue months ago and no one knew the solution. Of course, now that I don't have the problem, turtle comes to the rescue. Solution noted.

How did it come to this? Goodbye PowerPC. | sensory output

My syslogd error seemed to be caused by Time Machine because I haven't backed up in a couple weeks. I turned off Time Machine from it's Sys Prefs panel and the hog went away. But now Dock is acting up. Maybe the two are connected, I'll try your thing to see what happens.

Is it in Terminal I enter that code?

Yes, correct.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that.
