Who remembers Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethons back in the 1960's and 1970's? In DC, they would start at 11PM Sunday evening and would toggle between Jerry in NYC and the local TV folks. By 9am Monday things would ramp up with lots of big stars and kids who had MD. It was in the early 1960's that the MD folks invented the Carnival idea where a family would host games and such at their home and donate the money on teh local TV shows. In DC we had Bill Gormely's Count Down Carnival, which also showed Superman, had contests and took in the bucks for the Jerry Lewis event. things were more gentle in the 1960's.

I must admit, for me, the draw of the telethon were always those last hours when the real Jerry started to peek out.

We got the entire telethon in Phoenix. It was something we looked forward to when we were kids. Back then, the school year was the day after Labor Day until the Friday before Memorial Day. One year, my younger sister and I tried to stay up and watch all 23 1/2 hours. We fell asleep about 3am.
