It has been well asked before...
[ but now the Linksys WPC54G can be had online for under $20 ]
[ although some users have found it *un*supported on PowerBooks; others have had success ]
Anybody know the secret?
I would like to get a 3rd party wireless card for my PowerBook G4 1.67 because I'm tired of the poor wireless reception.
Ideally, I'd like to get something like an Orinoco w/ an antenna.
However, I've tried using 3rd party wireless cards with my PowerBook before and have not figured out how to disable the internal airport card and switch to the external 3rd party card (Linksys WPC54G). On older PowerBooks, I know a solution was to simply remove the airport card, but my PowerBook has airport integrated on the motherboard.

Shouldn't the two different wifi adapters be two different entries in network preferences?

I don't have a powerbook but have an old G4 iBook and use one of these since my airport went funny. It's very simple to use, comes with it's own software. I just turned the airport off and the iBook has been happy ever since.
Drivers are available for Tiger and Leopard.

I think all you need to do is set it up in System Preferences - Network, as mduell said. You will have to manage the settings, you need to set up a Location with the device you want, delete the ones you don't.

Thanks everybody for the reassurance.
And Matty-uk....
I don't find the unit on Amazon.COM (for U.S.), but I do notice that the *one* review on Amazon.co.uk (that you linked to) had only *one* very annoyed customer. Glad *your* experience was better.
When I searched Amazon.COM I did find:
http://www.amazon.com/IOGEAR-Wi-Fi-5.../dp/B0009JR3SE $32 @ Amz
(searching only on "54G USB adapter")
That averages 4-star revs (which I'll have to read through for Mac experiences.
Sounding hopeful. Further suggestions most welcome.

This is what I'd get, natively supported 11-n/g/b, rather than something that'll require finagling and drivers.

You would then turn off the internal airport and drag the cardbus/PCMCIA interface to the top of the network port list. Or you'd setup one network location to use the internal card and another network location to use the cardbus airport, for when you don't want to take the time to insert the cardbus during travel. After that it's simply a matter of switching between locations.
