I've got a 'Panasonic RR-QR240 Handheld Voice Recorder'
the question I would like to ask any knowledgeable folks is
can I record the voice messages from the panasonic to my
powerbook ?
I have a headphone to headphone cable,( stereo 3.5mm jack lead
to stereo 3.5mm jack lead -male to male ) can sound pass between
them using this and is there any software that could capture the
sound if it does?
Many thanks in-advance -Benign

hardware-wise, that'll work just dandy, as long as your laptop has a LINE-IN, as opposed to a microphone jack. As far as software, I'm not sure, though.

I have access to only an old G4 400 tower and a 1GHz titanium
neither of which has a line-in as far as I'm aware.
Was hoping it would work with only a microphone jack - pity.
Many thanks omar96 and benb.
I really need to get these files off the voice recorder - what is the quickest
and least expensive way to do it ?

For the G4 tower (and probably the TiBook), you could always grab a utility called LineIn, which will let you use the mic port as a line-in port. The quality on the G4 tower isn't that great though. Maybe the Tibook would sound better. If it's just voice, it might not be that big of a deal. Wouldn't wan tto do high-quality music work that way, I knwo that.

According to this Technote, TiBooks have a line-in jack, not a microphone jack:
Built-in Microphone
The built-in microphone is located at the bottom of the left speaker grille.
The sound signal from the built-in microphone goes through a dedicated preamplifier that raises its nominal 30-mV level to a nominal 150 mV (peak-to-peak) signal to the sound circuitry. That signal level assures good quality digitizing without driving the analog input into clipping.
Audio Input Jack
The audio input jack is a 3.5-mm mini phone jack located on the I/O panel on the back of the computer. The audio input jack accepts line-level stereo signals. It also accepts a stereo miniplug-to-RCA cable adapter for connecting stereo equipment to the computer.
The sound input jack signal connections are:
* tip: audio left channel
* ring: audio right channel
* sleeve: audio ground
So you should indeed be able to use Audacity to record just fine.
EDIT: actually, Audacity wouldn't notice my line-in port for some reason. The simple and nice Audio In worked great though.

The G4 400, same one I have, is in fact Line In. I should know, I had to buy a plaintalk mic just to record my voice on it.
However, regardless of the device you're using, always check that "Line In" is the source selected in the System Preferences > Sound > Input panel.
Also, if your TiBook is recent and came with Garageband, it's actually a really good tool to record sound. Sure, it may be a bit overkill, but it works dandy, and you can use the many built-in audio plug-ins to clean up the sound from sources such as a voice recorder or cassette tape.

For kicks, I pulled the Audiophile 2496 out of my machine, then tried Audacity, and Audacity wouldn't work until I loaded LineIn, no matter what I tried on the sound preferences. With the Audiophile, I don't need LineIn but with the onboard sound, I did.
