Does anyone know if the same level of student discount is available from an Official Apple Store as it over the phone and online?

Im thinking mainly in the UK but if anyone knows if it anywhere then let me know.
This is on Apple Hardware (MBP)

Thanks

Matt

From what I've read on here, if you have your Student ID you can get it at an Apple Store.

I personally have done this. I just showed my student ID and they gave me the discount right there. That, however, is in the US. Not sure about the UK

RAM is a very simple upgrade to do yourself. Also, don't buy RAM from Apple.

just been on the dog and bone to the London store and had them confirm i would get the same level of discount in store.

im sure theres a million threads on the ram out there, but if u price up a set of 2x2GB sticks at the same 1066MHz as the ones apple would supply.... (looks on ebay)... it would be £95 compared to the £83 it would cost me with discount to get them to do it, and i know if i did it i could get 2x1GB as well which i could sell but whos going to want 1gb sticks?

my only other option which would save my money would be to buy lower specked sticks... (looks on ebay again)... about £50 for 800MHz

What do you think, what would you do?

everyone says dont get apple to do it, but i think thats cause they dont realise that apple put 1066MHz in and they're prob pricing up 668 or 800's as replacements

Everyone says don't get Apple to do it, because Apple RAM in BTO options have long been marked up nearly 100%.

Yes, the brick-and-mortar Apple Store honors student discounts. I got the iMac I'm typing on right now that way. And yes, Apple marks up their RAM upgrades enormously, so it's not to the buyer's economic benefit to up the RAM in a BTO order. My iMac is running 4GB of RAM thanks to a very affordable do-it-yourself upgrade (I can't remember how much the stuff cost right now), and it was also a very "doable" DIY upgrade. You don't "need" 1066 RAM if the system only uses a slower speed bus, and you can always look for your upgrade parts by looking for whatever interface speed you like.

By the way, crazyreaper, I haven't heard anyone use "dog and bone" the way you did in a LONG time...

Apple stores do the same student discounts as online; you need a student id and a valid driver's license/state issued id that matches. Order the extra RAM online; it's much cheaper elsewhere, and order the same speed RAM as the machine has.

Good site for referencing specs for every Mac made. http://www.everymac.com/

thanks porter, im not a cockney/Londoner, in fact quite the opposite im from the north of England and very proud of it, but just thought i'd bring a bit of English culture to the board

and after the discussion in the above linked thread about RAM the laptop will only accept 1066MHz ram (as thats DDR3) where was 800MHz is DDR2 which means a different pin count and pin set up apparently, i never knew that DDR2 ment 800MHz and DDR3 ment 1066MHz

and as for apple been over price, i havent done too much research on it but to buy two 2GB 1066 MHz of ebays £95 where as there upgrade is £100 i think with out discount, mind you im not taking into account the cost of the 2x1GB 1066MHz that are in the original price for the model.

Anyway waiting for apple to phone me back, then it'll be ordered, getting the upgrade from them

You get the normal education discount on some things. However, the Higher Education discount (which is substantially greater) can only be accessed online.

If you're eligible for that, buy online.

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

because if theres not much difference between the 800 and 1066 performance wise i can save alot of money, the the time however i didnt know that DDR2 and 3 aren't cross-compatible, which was revieled in the adjoining more technical thread linked above, which now turns out might not even be true

but its ordered now so doesnt matter

Can you please explain the difference? I bought the iMac I'm using right now in a physical store and got exactly the same discount I'd have gotten online. I just said "I'm a student" and they ran with it...

In the UK, standard education discount (where you just say "I'm a student") is about 8%. But Higher Education discount is 15%... to get the latter, you have to place the order online at a special page you can only access from your campus network.

Normal Apple Education Store (UK)

Higher Education Store (UK)

Here I select my school from a list and then I'm into the Education Store. I've never looked at the "non-college" store, since I don't have a K-12 school to affiliate myself with to get in...
