I went to the Apple Store today to check out the new iMacs with the Core 2 Duos. But to my surprise, I open up the About panel and discover…

Perhaps the processor hasn't been installed into the machine yet and it currently is running a dummy processor.

Did you ask any Apple personnel what the deal is while in the store?

Nah, I probably should have. I wonder if they've noticed.

I was pretty sure what the deal was, anyway. I figure at some point, somebody at Apple added Merom into whatever list of CPU names About This Mac uses, but it was before Intel decided it would be called the Core 2 Duo, so they just called it "Dual-Core Intel Placeholder." And then they forgot to change it in 10.4.7.

I just thought it was a funny goof.

This is quite odd. Maybe the iMac you were useing/looking at was one of the original prototypes.

Uh, doubtful they have prototypes in some Apple Store in San Diego. Plus, all the Core 2 Duos said that. Like I said, I think Apple just forgot to put in the right name.

Maybe it's by the same team that did the weight saving device. Finding it in the PowerBook box was one of those genuinely funny WTF- moments

I tried the 24-inch iMac at the Apple Store and noticed the same thing on the System Profiler.

Maybe the 2.33 is identified correctly? Because the new 24-inchers the Apple Store just got in have Placeholders as well.

I'm with you... I have a 733 Quicksilver and don't have this feature either!

I smell a class action lawsuit. I better get a free Quad Mac Pro out of this or I'm going Dell!

I take my computer to Hertz and add more hertz to speed things up. They always give me a funny look, but when I pay my bill, they are always asking me to come back again, so I must be doing something right.

Whatever, don't question the reasons, just be glad that we haven't had threads spiral down into gay/bible flamefests since the powerbook broke.

Look, I can say "gay", "bi-curious", "Calvism is false", "the Bible condemns homosexuality", "I'd like to bang a hot eastern european dude and post pix on MacNN" and still this thread will stay on course. Amazing isn't it?

Anyway, the logic board died. It'd be too much to repair so the insurnace company is buying me a new MacBook.

The new 24" one at the Costa Mesa Apple Store says the same thing - Dual-Core Intel Placeholder.

Threw me for a loop, when I saw it, too.
